How much does Tiptronic hurt resale?
Hello,
I am a new to this forum. Many years on the Corvette forum (sold car). I'm in the market for a 993. I would like a red, black or white with a black interior, six speed, coup and under 50K miles.
I found the perfect car but it is a tiptronic.
How much harder is it to sell than a 6 speed if I can't stand it? Am I going to hate it? Should I hold out for a 6 speed. Any advice will help.

Get what you want. A tip should command a lower price than a comparable 6 speed....maybe $2-4K less? It will be a bit harder to sell, as most want a stick.
It's not like you're limiting your choices with your color flexibility. Hang in there.
Only you can determine if you'll love it or hate it.

I agree with Ed, get what you want. Performancewise, tip is a fraction faster than a shifter, Ferrari has just about phased out the shifter....there is no question that it is the future. But for me the shifter is absolutely essential in the last of the classics, I gotta have the shifter.
But I would explore tip possibilities for a 997.....but hey, try it out, you just may like it...

generally these cars are all about the stick experience.
that being said, never turn down a good 993 tip if the price is right.
i know of one now that im holding out for

Thanks,
Its not often a one owner car with under 30K miles and cost under 30K comes on the market. I was trying to sell myself on shifting from the steering wheel. Never done it and was thinking it could be fun. When I'm over it I could just flip it as a 2 owner car with 35K miles. I'm going to sleep on it.

Tip doesn't necessarily hurt sales, it simply narrows the number of potential buyers to only those wanting it. If you plan on driving the car daily in heavy stop and go traffic, is where Tip would be a benefit.

To answer your question, if the car is priced correctly relative to the market it should not take too long to sell. However don't kid yourself into thinking that the "30K miles, under $30K" example you cite is such a smoking deal. There are so many variables to contend with; mileage and price are just two of them. If it's a manual you really want, take your time and wait for the right one. It might take 6 days or 6 months, but if you are realistic in your requirements, you will find the "one."
It appears to me that the demand is higher for a cab/tip than a coupe/tip. The reason being is that much of the tiptronic population is using the 993 more as a cruiser for themselves or their wives and want the benefit of the open top. No scientific study done on this one, just my opinion.
Lastly, many good deals for 993's get posted on the member to member ad section. You can only see that section with a paid RL membership of $18. So go ahead and whip out that credit card and who knows, you might find that dream car of yours today.

Tiptronic Experience
My experience with the tip in 964 and 993 is that the transmission always seems to select a gear that is one gear too high. Of course you can just about drive the car in second gear all the time.
The tip dramatically reduces the universe of buyers. The 35K mile 964 tip coupe sold for about $2K less than a manual trans coupe would have. The 993 tip cab sold for about $4k less than a manual cab however the colors (white/blue) probably contributed to that lower price.
I would not recommend the tip.

Three Wheelin'
the tip is not faster on a 993.
It is getting harder to find good 993s under 50k miles, but it's not that hard, no reason to jump on something you may regret.
Like others have said, comparable cars - 6 speed is worth more. And I think the gap really widens when you start getting into super clean, low mile cars - stick to tip.

Good decision. When I was in the market for a 993 there was a gorgeous black cab Tiptronic priced to go with very low mileage. I was hoping it will sell fast before I was tempted any more. It did sell fast and I was glad. I could not see myself driving a tip 993. I did find my dream car Cab with very low mileage 6 speeds. I am elated with my car and there is nothing like shifting through the 6 gears with the top down. With me it was not about the price of one versus the other, tip vs shift and cab vs coupe. My dream car always was a cab 6 speed 993. Mine is going to be inherited by one of my grand kids so I do not really care which one is higher price or if it will sell fast. The 993 is the most beautiful Porsches ever made and they are and will be a highly sought collectors car

When I was searching there were a couple of tips that looked attractive from the ads, but seemed to languish for sale.
As was implied above, a tip's performance/capability/behaviour should not be confused with the latest "auto", DSG.
