Valve Lifter tapping and temp gage going to hot
I was wondering if anyone else has experience this:
The car has slight valve tapping when cold, and doesn't seem to go away. The car at rest, after driving for a bit will send the temp gage to high. I know if you have to much oil, the oil will foam. I have 10 Qt's with new oil filters in the car, so i don't believe this is the problem.
I have been told, and read that ATF, about 1/2 qt added to oil will clean everything out.
Any advice, you guys haven't let me down yet.
Thanks!

when the car is running, the oil pressure gauge is fine. When i am at idle, the pressure starts to rise to Hot.
I am currently running Mobil 1 15-50W oil.

If you're talking about the temp gauge on left goes to hot at idle and gets into the red while idling then you have a problem. Oil temp sensor could be bad, or you could have an oil cooler fan that is no good too.

ok, be careful not to overfill the oil. the gauge may not be accurate and "full" on the gauge is usually right in the middle, when your temp is at 9 o clock your oil level should be around 2-3 o clock for the most recommended level.
but, always verify with the dipstick. tons of info here and on the pcarworkshop site...
if you overfill you will burn a lot of oil and your car will be smelly. what happens is the oil gets sucked into the intake through the oil take vent (if i remember correctly)

It sounds like your engine oil cooler (in the RF fender-wing) cooling fan resistor is no good. Remove your engine under panel, do not utilize any ATF oil in your engine, such as you have suggested. Make sure the engine oil level is not overfull and utilize 15w-50 weight oil i.e. Motul 6100. Normal engine oil operating temperatures will run at the 8-9 O:Clock positions. In desert climates, heavy traffic, strenuous conditions, track usage and extended idling, the engine can run up to the 10 O:Clock mark but never above.

Hi
Do not even consider adding ATF to your engine oil. Or doing anything rash. The oil cooler fan has two speed settings. As suggested above the low speed one is kaput as is very often the case. You can test it by removing the correct relay and shorting a couple of terminals (look up the guide).
Not having the low speed setting is not the end of the world because the high speed one will cut in. It just means your temp reading will go higher than a car with both settings working before a fan cuts in.
As for the oil level gauge it will go up and down as oil goes in and out of the tank and should be used only when the car is at idle as per the manual.

Which lies just out of view in the following photo. You can just see the lower red band under the edge of the steering wheel.
The oil level gauge should indicate 3 o'clock when idling for at least 15 seconds on level ground and near the bottom of the scale whille driving.
The indications in the following photo are correct if the car has been parked and idling for a while or when driven in hot weather and idling.
Just under 2 on the oil pressure gauge (goes up to 5 while driving) is normal at idle.
That oil temperature indication is getting up there. Where I live, it never makes it to that unless I get stuck in traffic which never happens.
