Holy Hell! That thing could power the entire Earth...
That is correct.
Very, very inside. And funny as all get out.

Does anyone know if these container ships are diesel/electric?

I think in the case of this engine it directly drives the props...but not too sure. That would have one hell of a electric system!

It used to be that there were auxilary engines for electric power (lights, A?C etc.) and main diesel engines for propulsion but nowadays 2-8 engines supply electrical power (usually at least one of them is not running but can be) to everything, including propulsion.
I remember many years ago a man died inside of on of these engines in the diesel engine factory in Finland. He was cleaning the crankcase when they started to turn the engine by outside power source (to check everything works etc.) and somehow missed the fact that he was inside. These things are massive...

I wonder in this particular case, with such a massive engine, does it drive a generator or is it 'direct drive'?
It seems that the extra cost of a generator/motor pair, the electricals etc. to handle this sort of power would add too much cost, but what the heck do I know, certainly not a ship engineer.
Cheers,
Mike

On a tanker or cargo ship you can still see a straight prop, direct drive ( through reduction gears) arrangement with the diesel engine driving that huge shaft directly. Looking at the video, you can see the familiar( to me) straight shaft, so i can safely say that its driving a single prop directly...
Ahh... miss those ships some times!

I wonder if that cylinder hydraulically locked? I was reading our cruise ship specs last year. There was 40,000 hp in motive power (2 units I believe) and 80,000 hp in electric generating power (approx). Most of the electricity was generated with a gas turbine driver.
