Nah. ANY other department in the state, maybe. Especially last year with Furlough Fridays. But never the Air Resources Board. Evil truly is housed within those walls.

This has been done before in the UK. Mark Budgen who had a supercharged 993 had had it done to his cat. Whilst it free up the cat it'll still weigh a ton!

Cheers,

David

CARB probably gets a 100% budget increase this year.

Hi there,

as Dave says my exhaust now has 100 cell cats. I needed to free it up a bit for the tpc SC. It's still working for me,although no lighter :-)

Cheers, Mark.

Hi

I bought the 100 cell inserts from Gert and had them fitted to my standard enclosure by a very good welder I know. He said it was a pig of a job. I have got pictures somewhere. Looking at the old ones I would guess that the 100 cell ones would give a performance boost. They certainly sound better. The old cat was still passing the UK MOT at 185k miles.

Hi Mark,

Long time, no talk! Hope you are well. One day I may try your route though with two children that's probably not going to happen for a while!

Cheers,

David

When you got them back, how much different did they look? I am a bit worried about visual inspection, and a technician seeing brand new welds and freshly cleaned surfaces.

They will have to take the cat off to open and weld so if you got them to do it on the "top surface" would it be visible?

Easy solution, pour some old oil over the new welds.

Why are the OEM cats so much heavier? Is it the casing or the higher density cell material inside?

Anyone know what weight saving is gained by replacing the innards with 100 or 200 cell guts?

Is that a job most muffler shops could do, or is it more specialized than that?

I would assume it is the heavy exterior that has most of the weight. When I swapped to my 100 cell cats I saved 15 to 20lbs. The original cat is soooo heavy!

I've got the FD 200 Cell SC's and they weigh a good 20lbs less than the OEM, MUCH less heat back there vs OEM as well. The 200s moved the torque higher in the rev band, I imagine the 100s would move it higher?

Mine is still very happy to trundle around at low revs.
