I agree Hans, all the distributors I have done so far (about 8-10 now) belts looks great, and visually no way near failing. However, the picture looks pretty scarey!

Cheers,

Mike

Not likely.

The INA bearings are available in Germany for €48 (about $64) each.

Yes, the source of these bearings would be helpful. My friend has been on a quest to find these and so far has been unsuccessful
, and I know he has tried hard. He did find someone who has a source, but they did not want to sell the bearings.

Hang in there Mike as I will be producing them in the near future...and most likely for less than $64. I'll be using an INA bearing.

I'm doing so for the challenge and fun of it. Mind you, the challenge is over as I have the jig all sorted out.

And as usual, even though these bearings are supposedly unobtainium, not being a very good capitalist, I won't be asking 964/993 owners to bend over.

Very nice, Alex.
A 7201-B-2RS-TVP would work if you can open the ID to 12.45 mm.
Price depends on how many you order from suppliers like Schaeffler or?
Since they're Angular Contact Bearings, correct installation is required to be effective for axial load.
Go for it.

Thanks Mike for the rebuilt dist for my '96 C4S (172k miles). The dist I sent Mike was DOA with all three bearings shot; plus the belt broke !

Hi

I replaced my belt at 185k miles and it looked fine. One bearing race was stuck to the main shaft so the bearing popped apart when the shaft was removed. The bearing looked very dry inside so I repacked it. There was a black plastic race inside and one row of *****. The other bearings felt fine, although if someone comes up with a source I would replace all 3 of mine......

All the best

Has anyone come up with a good distributorless ignition for the 964/993? The caps, rotors, wires, distributor belt, bearings....so expensive and high-maintenance...I imagine there's no way to do it without going with a completely different engine management system.

Berni, which bearing was it, the one on the primary or secondary distributor shaft? In either case, an upper bearing, I take it?

Hi There

Actually was the upper bearing on the secondary shaft. I was going to try to separate it from the shaft then thought better of it. The shaft had to be tapped in and out because the siezed race had to get back past the cage and ***** to click in place.

This is the only pic I have of the distributor in bits, sadly it does not show the bearing in question.

All the best

Thanks Berni, that is what I expected. Its usually the secondary shaft bearing based on what I've seen reported so far.

If you had to tap it out, the shaft had likely galled itself to the inner race of the bearing.

Let's see, I was the very first person to post a reply in this thread...

Just got a call from my mechanic - my secondary distributor's bearing is seized, the belt itself hanging by a thread. The car has 107K miles, and there is no history of the distributor ever being pulled out other than cap and rotor replacement. BTW when I replaced the caps and rotors 5K miles ago the belt looked good.

So, can I change my vote in the poll???
