Have any of you driven a 996 GT3 MKII?
It seems to me that those cars are very far compared to our cars in terms of performance. I have driven a 997 GT3 and a 997 GT3 RS and I can say that those cars have evolved to a very high level of performance. I read that the 996 GT3 MKIIs are very close to the 997 GT3s.
The reason I ask is because if I spend USD20k in mods(350hp engine etc), this will bring me pretty close to a 996 GT3. So I was thinking of holding off spending on mods.
So is the 996 GT3 a desirable car? Are you guys aiming for one?
Or will a highly modded 993 be more desirable than a 996 GT3?

Cam,
I have no skin in the game - as my car is faster than most 996 GT3's
However i had the pleasure this year using an 04 GT3 CS for driver training and hot laps. The car was very well set up - was fast and capable at 8/10ths (it was after all a borowed car) stiff and sounded absolutely glorious.
I like them a lot - and i like the rawness of no driver aids and PSM PASM etc - imagine turbocharging one !!!
If you are not in love with the 993 - get a GT3. They are after all 6-8 years newer....
YMMV - Hope that helps,
Simon.

I have owned both, and they are not comparable. The 993 will never be as fast as the GT3. If your after speed and tracking, buy the GT3. If you love the looks of the 993, do what I read and put a GT3 Engine/transmission into a 993. I love the 993 body, but the engine/tranny in the GT3 is a revving marvel.
I have 36K miles and plenty of tracking, and really no issues with the GT3. I have driven cross country twice and just change oil and put in gas. I have spoke with others that have over 50k miles and still the car performs.
Can't go wrong either way...just have to decide what your after. if you put 20k into your 993, it will never be a GT3....simply put.

Yes, i've driven one, but only for about 40 minutes and it was just mostly mellow street use.
One of the the BEST parts of the 996 GT3 experience is the engine sound when starting up from dead cold. The cold start cycle sounds like it is trying to rip the exhaust tips off the pipes for the first 30 seconds or so.

so say the magazines. Excellence wrote an article and ended by saying they preferred the 6 over the 7

indeed yes they are
Are you guys aiming for one?
No, the extra performance does not outweigh the aesthetics and cheesy interior IMO
Or will a highly modded 993 be more desirable than a 996 GT3?
depends on the mods.
I'd take a few of these 993 GT2 clones i've seen on the boards over ANY GT3.

Full Boost - I am in love with the Porsche DNA. As I was driving the 993 in some twisties, I realized a coilover setup would be ideal. I mean I begin to identify possible areas where the car will do better like what most of you guys have done.
Jetmech - I think you summarized it in a few words, a heavily modded 993 will not match a GT3. I was just reading the latest issue of Excellence, and they say the GT3 cup car is one of the best. It took off 20 secs from the 993 RSR! I mean that is a large chunk of time....
You are also correct that I will not go wrong in either. I will most likely get a GT3 when funds permit.

And when you do, look me up...After my divorce, I am rethinking my toy collection. I can have details on my car from a dealer that has always serviced my car.
It has all he safety gear you will want, EuroPipes, LWFW, RS Wing/Seats, when you get serious, just let me know.
Good luck!
