Default Engine drop epidemic

Seems like half of Rennlist is dropping engines and transmissions, so I didn't want to miss out on the fun.

Thanks to Falcondriver I have a barely used LFW and clutch, and thanks to FD Motorsports I have new parts to install it! Put new TO and pilot bearings in even though the others were fine. New bolts seals and release shaft parts also came from Mark, at prices better than even the discount dealers. Now I just have to wait for the locally sourced Olista grease to show up (must be made of crushed unicorn horn's as long as the dealer is taking to get me a small tube).

Lot's of projects in addition to the RSCS clutch. Injectors getting cleaned, clean up engine, trans and engine bay, different rear control arms with ERP bushings, DME chip, SAI delete, t/c gaskets, paint fan and housing, and then re-corner balance and align. That should keep me busy for most of the winter.

Thought I would show my engine lowering setup. I have seen posts with multiple jacks half a lumber yard and some of them looked kind of scary.

I used a Craftsman Pro aluminum ATV jack ($179) with a little bit of lumber down the engine seam (shims under exchangers are just to balance the engine, no weight on them). Also a scissor type transmission jack ($50 ebay score) under the front crossmember. The ATV jack came with 2" risers that matched the lowest height of the scissor jack perfect.

This setup was rock solid, safe and rolls really easy. I dropped the engine and trans without help and it was, dare I say, easy. No issues at all.

Not quite true, 1 issue, I mis-measured my height on the jackstands by 1 1/2 inches. The ISV and MAF wouldn't clear the rear of the car, but 2 hose clamps and a few seconds later and it rolled right out.

Sorry for the rambling post, just excited to have winter projects !!! Thanks to those Rennlisters before me that showed the way with great DIY's.

Jack setup:

Not quite enough room:

Out Lot's of cleaning to do.

The engine seems balanced on the stand, so I plan to put another jack under the diff, unbolt the trans and roll the engine away.

ATV jacks are the only way to go.

That is, when used with a scissor lift. Best TOOL, I've ever bought.

Unless you've got a 2 post mechanic's lift. Then a solid rolling table works better.

But when you're coming from the 30ish min removal job that a carb engined, 901 trans world was, these late model cars are something you'd never look forward to................

Enjoy! Nothing like a job well done, done yourself.

Just curious...why did you remove the rear bumper? I found that I could get the rear of the car high enough either using my large floor jack or my overhead come-a-long to avoid all that extra work.

I did much the same thing Eric did, I removed my bumper to clean the crap that had accumulated back there, replace the bumper piping (gasket) and generally to keep from scratching it while I was working in the engine bay. I knew it wasn't necessary though. Hopefully getting the new piping on and the bumper back on won't be as challenging as it is on the front bumper.

We used this table from Harbor Freight:
http://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lb...art-93116.html
Also left the rear bumper cover on. I mis-measured also. But, my ISV fit through the exhaust tip hole!
I think you should let me store your Fister Stage 2s in a warmer climate for you until spring.

I only removed the bumper after those posts of the rusted chassis parts the other night and figured I was going to have rust to repair to do.

To my surprise I had none.

I was also surprised how easy it was to get the bumper off, looking back I am glad I did because as easy as it was to roll my jacks, I was able to move the engine/trans back and to the left as I lowered giving plenty of clearance at the driveshaft/starter. I can see where clearance would suck if your jack setup didn't roll sideways and back easy.

A mid rise lift is in the works, friend of a friend is going to sell his and I am first in line. I have access to 2 post lifts @ work but wanted to take my time at home.

I really don't mind working from the floor, I didn't even fire up the air compressor, hand tools only (I got done and realized I could have saved time with my air ratchet but old school is more fun.

Thanks for all the inspiration guys!

Have a Happy Holiday!

I would but I can't find them, they are in the basement somewhere with the rest of the car.

My wife is convinced I am going to reassemble the car in the basement so I can spend all winter with it.

Thanks again Rick.

i'm about to take the plunge as well...once i get out of being snowed in at my cabin in N. Ga mountains. We aren't going anywhere for days. I hope to get cracking on it next week.

If anyone has a ATV lift or an engine stand they will loan out, please PM me!

How much snow are you getting? My sister lives just south of Franklin, NC, said yesterday they expect 6 - 8 in. +
