As stated many times above, the '95 has OBD 1 which will not throw a check engine light when your SAI ports get clogged up (and with clogged SAI ports - you will not pass state emissions inspection - if you have one). I too prefer the basket handle third brake light.
I suggest the condition (in a pre purchase inspection) is far more important than which year you buy in the 993 series.

+1 on what others have said.
You can also try to find a 95-98 with the Sport Suspension option, code M030.
This includes upgraded swaybars, drop-links, springs and shocks.
The shocks in this set up do not last long (25-50K) so you will want to upgrade these if the previous owner has not already done so.
You can also do this upgrade yourself after you get the car if it does not have the option- about 2K.

Race Car
'95's and '97 and above can be chipped
'96's cannot be chipped
'95 Owner here, and I specifically looked for a '95. My car has been a track car for over 70% of its mileage, now at 55k miles and still going amazingly strong.
Your Fiend had no f'n idea!!

Hi,
I sold my '88 and I am searching for a 993. My friend has owned his '96 for six years.
He has told me to to avoid the '95 cars for the following reasons:
1. The 1995 suspension is inferior and was fixed in 1996.
2. The gear ratios are better on the 1996 as they better utilize the powerband.
3. More torque on 96+
I think the torque is a non-issue for me. What I am concerned about is the rear suspension. How much would I need to spend to upgrade this, or would most owners already have performed the fix?
I did a search and the threads always turned into arguments about VR & ODBII. I couldn't get any info on the rear suspension.
My searches on Autotrader do show a surprising price difference between the 95 vs 96.

With "fiends" like that, who needs enemies??
Seriously, my only advice is to judge each car you look at on its own merits and have a PPI performed on any potential candidate by experienced personnel who know 993's.
1) The suspensions are virtually identical.
2) The gear ratios on all US-spec N/A 993's are the same.
3) V-Ram cars have a little more low-end torque. You need to drive examples of each to see which one YOU like best. Performance software can help bridge the gap.
Hope this helps,
