I've heard that it used to be illegal to drink (anything) while driving. Interestingly a rental 2010 BMW 1-series in Spain two month ago did not have a single cup holder. Very uncomfortable when you spend 2 weeks in a car driving from place to place in 90F weather.

PS. Trivia time. Which car had the first cupholders? No googling!

This thing sold for $217.50? Seriously? I guess P.T. Barnum was right.

Nope, not that either. Although somebody once counted 27 (!) cupholders in an early 2000s Grand Caravan.

Yep, Car and Drivel or one of the rags had a story on this back when I used to read it in doctor's office or some such. 27 cupholders for 8 passengers.

Trivia answer, btw, is... 1989 Toyota Corolla, which had the first retractable in-dash flimsy plastic but working cupholder, as far as I know.

Oh, you don;t _have_ to have a drink in a cup holder even 5% of the time. Same way you don;t need a radio, air conditioner, interior lights, roll up windows, reclining seats, carpets, glove box, rear seat. Stay in the moment! Have I missed anything particularly plebian?

I can't believe that I'm actually defending cupholders in a Porsche. But, as Bill and Mainiac above and many others, I've driven my 993s cross-country with the first one taking a 2-week 4,600 mile trip. Without a cupholder. Not a big deal, I drink iced tea from crew-top bottles. But once a good simple light and cheap solution was found (VW dual cupholder) I was happy to have it for those rare occasions when I need one.
OK OK, I agree that if you're going to tool down the Interstate with cruise engaged, radio on and A/C blasting, you may need a cool drink and a place to stuff it (I can't believe you guys are defending cup holders either!!).

When I take longer trips in the car they are on back roads driven in a decidedly non-plebian way taking breaks often. Much more fun and scenic!!

However, I do love this forum and you folks, so "To each his (or her) own". Let peace reign.

Dan, there is peace We're just jostlining for who's the biggest fan of 993's little oddities

If I ever get an adult car again, and I might have to as I'm getting tired of a 993 as a daily driver after 7 years, I'll relegate the P-Car to weekend drives down back roads in the spring and fall and to daytrips to Maine with the roof down to sit on the rocks and eat some lobsters in August. But I'm having hard time letting go of daily feel of this car.

Dan, I don't eat or drink in any of my cars.

But then there's this: there have been many times while driving on the twisty back country roads when I've stopped at a place to buy some lunch to go, with the desire to pull over at a nice outdoor scenic spot and eat and enjoy the weather and the view instead of having to use the crowded outdoor tables at the restaurant.

With the 993, I have to rig up a way of holding the cup until I get to a nice place to stop and eat. And watch my driving so it doesn't spill. Or purposely buying something in a bottle or can (but often all they had available were drinks in a cup.) It was a total PITA every time.

In addition, I always carry a small bottle of drinking water in a re-usable plastic or metal bottle to stay hydrated. There's no place to put it in the 993 except on the front seat. Well, if you're driving really assertively on the back twisties then you know what happens. I got tired of the bottle always flying off the front seat. Now it's snug in it's holder and keeps things safe.

After I bought the Inventiva Concepts cupholder, all was solved. So, it's not only about drinking while driving.......

In the '50's and '60's, the first attempts at cupholders were indentations in the the glove compartment doors when opened. Only barely functional at drive-ins.
