Default Windshield replacement - 95 993 C2

Hi All:

On Thanksgiving Day a rock impact on the freeway created a crack that grew so quickly the popular chip/small crack repair won't work and I need a new windshield for my 1995 C2.

What is the typical cost for this work and how long does it usually take?

Thanks.

Search is your friend but IIRC it's about a grand and takes a couple hours. Be sure you pic a topnotch place to do it.

Up here (Vancouver) the glass alone is ~$1200.

I'd recommend getting a bodyshop that's fitted 993 windshields before. It can be screwed up. Also, check for even the slightest signs of rust as it's quite common along the bottom corners.

All Star Auto Glass 1-888-357-1048 quoted me online, $626.48 for a 95 C2 Coupe, green tint, green shade with antenna. Includes mobile service, installation, and warranty. They are located in California but have a nationwide network. You can go to their website and get the quote yourself by inputting the information www.allstarglass.net.

About a grand, and this is one job where you really, really want an expert installing it. DO NOT use any old 1-800 glass shops that hasn't specific knowledge about how best to install glass on a 993.

I just got mine back last Friday. Had insurance fund the job and my body shop that I trust do it - plan to get some pics and a thread soon. Sunset sells the windshield for <$800. Make sure whoever does the labor is carefuil not to scratch the paint and do due diligence searching for any spot of potential rust.

Sure. There's a high end body shop called Eli's Independent on 3rd St. one block east of La Cienega, right near the Beverly Center.

I found them because I used to have an M3 and they were the BMW approved body shop for Beverly Hills BMW. Over time I realized they were also the go to shop for Beverly Hills Porsche. And Mercedes.

They've probably done as much body and glass work on Porsches than any shop in L.A. So when it was time to do my windshield, I knew Danny over at Eli's would do a good job. And he did.

I'm not sure I understand why a 993 windshield is so special. Good glass shops will sand and prime rust spots in the channel and will cover the front cowl so it doesn't get scratched. I know centering the glass is important too. Is any of this different than any other windshield? I'd guess that the number of older Porsche windshields that get done in my town on an annual basis is probably in the single digits annually and this is spread out to a number of different shops and installers. The last quote I got was $1200 and we pay more for everything up here.

I don't think the its the 993 windshield that's special.

I think its finding a good experienced glass shop that really knows the work to do it right on any given specific make/model that's special. There are many lazy and/or inexperienced service providers who are more than willing to cut corners out there. I would imagine a 1-800 glass shop has more than it's fair share.

Just be thankful you don't own a Bugatti Veyron and have to have it shipped back to France for windshield replacement. Wasn't the cost around $60K?....... puts things into perspective a bit.
