So there are two cars I have narrowed the search down to (for now)
1) Blue 1997, 80k miles. Priced at $26.5k
2 owners.
Northern car to start (tiny bit of rust, nothing major)
Needs new tires
Few odds / ends
Original Shocks
Very good overall condition
2) Grey 1996, 43k miles. Priced at $35.5k
PCA owned
Excellent condiion, needs nothing
California & Midwest car
Updated MO-30 Sport suspension (Bilstein HDs)
I imagine the selling price would be about $24k for the 97 and $33k for the 96.
My question is whether the better condition and lower miles justify the 8-9k in price difference. I know the suspension upgrade is worth about 3k. But in general, with these cars - better to keep the money for the repairs that will obviously be coming with a 15 year old car - or better to just get the best example I can afford right from the get go?
I think that there's nothing to discuss between these two cars. The cheaper one wins by a mile.
Oh, one note. When you buy a car, whatever the PO did is a plus, but not worth anything near what he paid for it. So, no, it's not extra $3K for suspension when you're putting the pricing together.
IMO the slate grey commands a small price premium. If the car had some aftermarket 18" rims or hollow spokes something around $35K sounds reasonable. As it sits i'd try and get the seller down to $32-33K.
Of the two this is the one I'd be thinking about. After Riv Blu, probably my fav paint color, although I've never seen it in real life.
Well the bit of rust showed up in the PPI - just a bit of corrosion behind the rear tires... apparently the most common place for it to show up and fixable.
If the rust you see is the full extent of the rust -- but it rarely is. Avoid the rusty one. But negotiate the price of that grey thing to something more reasonable.
