great info.... so I guess i need to find someone local with the Sumis so i can take a look at them
One of the biggest issues is the actual shape of the tire, and not just the tread or section width or the recommended wheel width.
I have run tires in 275/35 that fit perfectly and have had 265/35's rub (on the same 10" Wheel). You need to have a look at the shape of the tire. The more squared off the shoulders the more chance of rubbing.
I have some 225's on a set of 8.5" wheels, a set of pirelli's and a set of Yoko's and the Pirelli's look stretched and the Yoko's don't.

Maybe you also need to have a look on some of the other forums like BMW etc, I am sure that we are not the only group putting 225/40 's on 8" rims...

I am running 235/40 in the front with 8.5" rims. The backs are 285/30 on 10" rims. The tires fit perfect and do not look stretched. You can come by any time and look at mine if you like.
