Default 993 C4 Torque Tube

Does anyone have experience with rebuilding or having a 993 C4 torque tube rebuilt?

no actual experience, but...while shopping for a C4S, I came across a beautiful example at a dealer across the country. They initially diagnosed the driveline noise to be a bad bearing in the torque tube.

two options-used from a dismantler...found one for $1k, others for more IIRC, or new from Porsche-you don't want to know $$. Personally, I've never heard of anyone being able to rebuild one, but certainly I could be wrong.

This is a VERY rare failure I was told, by two shops I contacted with much 993 C4 experience. After the deal fell thru on the car, the piece of crap salesman told me the noise was in the wheel/tire set afterall. They bolted on a different set of wheels and tires, and the noise went away.

Before you go down the torque tube road, be sure you get a trusted opinion from someone with LOTS of experience with 993 C4's. Cause, it'll cost you $3K at the least, and it might not really be the problem.

Good luck, and keep the group informed.

I pulled the cover off the bottom of the car and the noise is coming from the area of where the torque tube bolts to the front differential. I used a stethoscope and determined it was not the differential but just aft.
the noise is in all gears and increases and decreases with engine speed and speed of the car.

I had a C4 where the driveshaft for the front wheels sheared in half ... is the AWD actually working? You can verify by getting the car on a lift in neutral and spinning a rear wheel to see if the front wheel moves with it.

Half of that shaft would still be rotating within the tube, of course, if it did snap on you, but not sure it would make a noise. Just a thought.

No experience rebuilding one... but perhaps it could still be the differential. I happen to have my torque tube and diff laying in my garage so I snapped a few pictures. The diff goes into the tube a ways and meets up with a female end of a rod with splines.

Dan,
Thanks for the pictures, this is exactly where the noise is coming from.
From your second picture I see a bearing in the tube, can you see a bearing
in the diff. where the male spline exits. (picture if you have time)
thanks mark

Mark,

I have a torque tube and front diff that I just took of my '95 C4 that has 43K miles. It's turning into a 2WD track car. I'm in N. Calf. I need to clean out my garage.
