Default Odometer quit working

I noticed today that my odometer has stopped working, but the trip odometer in the dash computer still functions???
Is this an easy fix? Is it just a cable replacement?
Thanks in advance...

Thanks for all the information on the odometer fix......replaced gear and that was it.....

Hardest part of the job was getting the ring off the speedometer casing.....had to go very slow and pry it off......took half the time of the total repair of 1 hour..........

Speedometer needle adjustment removal was easy but intricate.....

Back in business!!

A rewarding repair, but darn those little gears are expensive!

I agree. $29 (shipped) for a tiny 15 tooth gear is expensive. But, can you imagine the cost if we sent it in to a speedo repair shop. Or worst yet, took it the a Porsche service center?

Champion Porsche quoted me $680,- for the job. They send the unit out, not an in house job, but of course they didn't tell me who the guy is that does it.
Found someone cheaper

I think the going rate to ship to NH speedo is somewhere around $150.

Yep, North Hollywood just did mine for $140. Turned around in just a couple of days. Ken

Yup. The repair is really easy once you get committed to the "pry the bezel off the guage" instruction. Luckily the rubbery gasket hides all errors.

I used a very small flat head watchmakers screwdriver to pry the bezel off the speedometer case and spun it around numerous times to loosen it and then after fixing the gear, used a large steel socket and rolled it over the raised bezel edges to flatten back down and re-secure........no damage whatsoever.......HAVE TO GO REAL SLOWWWWWW.......

When I did this I didn't remove the neddle. After removing all the hardware off the back od the speedo, I was able to pull the motor out and expose the gears. The only other thing I noticed is you have to make sure the new gears are well seated in the gears which drive the odometers.

I also wonder what VDO or DMV would say once they see the little blue glue has been distrubed.

I just paid $10 for a Delrin gear off Fleabay. Was a bit tight but worked like a champ Apparently, those gears are the same on a multitude of different mfg's/cars....a one type fits all if you will.

I also realized if you just cut and reinstall the clear plastic runner that passes by the gear motor, one doesn't have to disassemble the entire speedo and makes thing quite a bit faster. I used automotive clear emblem adhesive to reattach.
