Why do we need an ignition key if we have to use the keyfob for the disabler?

Has anybody eliminated the ignition switch and replaced it with a start button?

 

 

46 years of beautiful tradition from LeMans to the Cayman and you want to add something cheap and tawdry like a START button?!

 

You can buy the start button, and get a whole s2000 to go along with it. much better idea.

 

The wife's car has a start button and I really like it. Start button just doesn't seem right on a 993. On a 996/7 it would be perfect.

Just wish other manufacturers would get on board and place the ignition switch on the right side (which is the left side). I always hate moving between vehicles. I look like an idiot trying to put my key in the headlight switch on my daily driver.

Sorry but a "start button" in any street car seems juvenille to me. My S2000 was so equipped and I always thought it was a rather dumb feature.

I was looking at 2007 Infiniti M35 the other day. Start button there. Great idea, given that you don't have to take the key out of your pocket at all to open or start the car.

 

^ Same for my 335. Just love that feature where you never have to grab the key out of your pocket.

 

Guess I should have qualified my statement a bit. I like the fact that I can grab my key, stick it in my pocket and when I open the door it adjusts the seats and lets me push the button to start the car. All of this without removing the key from my pocket as others have stated.

I do agree that if I had to put the key in the ignition and then press the button it would be pretty pointless.

 

Another "gimmick" some guy on the top floor came up in hopes that we will trade our cars in...'cause its not the "latest".

 

I like the idea of not having to fumble around with a key at night since our ignition slot doesn't light up.

What is so bad about eliminating the need for a key? Do race cars require keys?

 

I will warn you, please consider very carefully the risks of messing with the immobilizer system on your 993. It is an extremely expensive system and it is wired to many many other systems in the car. I would highly recommend NOT doing this. Porsche did a wonderful job making the 993 difficult to steal. Any messing with the immobilizer will greatly increase the possibility of theft. And that is IF, the push button set up was installed correctly. I know of this from first hand experience with a customer car.

push button start and door open is awesome, had it in the last 4 DDs, you can say its stupid but, its quite convenient esp when you have things in your hand, you never have to reach in your pocket to open the doors, start the car or lock. I dont see how this is a bad thing?
