Yes absolutely the immobilizer is tied into the ignition switch.
not to mention the Alarm.

I'm not saying its a horrible idea and that It can't be done. I'm just saying to exercise some caution if you decide to do this.

95 993s also do not have a remote feature (yep, I've written a DYI long time ago, but a $65K car without a remote door open/close is a bit ridiculous for 1995). Later 993s have the dumb immobilizer dance that you have to perform to start the car. I'm as old-fashioned as it gets and I enjoy the 993 for it's idiosyncrasies, but the keys could be better in every respect.

I have keyless go in my benz and it is convenient. But you aren't going to replicate that type of integration in a 993.

All a start button would do is this:

You unlock the car with the remote, that you still remove from your pocket.

you then need to insert the key to the run position, and then hit the start button.

How is that a benefit?

I'm about 95% sure you won't be able to eliminate the key totally.

What is so bad about eliminating the need for a key? Do race cars require keys?
some race cars don't have doors. You want to weld yours shut?

I would agree. The 993 is the last 911 that shares the original, smaller platform and still retains the dash with all the original switch and gauge placement back to 1964. I think this is the reason it is so attractive. To add a pushbutton anything ..

just seems so incongruous on so many levels on this basic sportscar ..

However, I think that ^^ would look right at home if you could find space for it here, maybe between the navigation screen and the cupholder?? ...

Come on.... There are numerous topics on here on how to add "cup holders" and navigation to these cars.

Not to mention... Light upgrades, wheels, brakes, suspension. We are always improving these cars to give them what today's cars have and still look original.

The way I see it.... The only crime would be to drop in a water-cooled engine or a chevy 350!

I do agree that if I had to put the key in the ignition and then press the button it would be pretty pointless.

I'll qualify my earlier "juvenille" response better.

Comptletely agree with a "start" button as long as it eliminates the key-in-the-ignition process (I think this is "keyless go" on some cars). Definitely an added convenience. If you must do both, as in S2000 and some other very expensive sports cars, I think it's just silly.

+1 on the Dont' mess with the immobilizer advice.
