Unhappy Tiptronic: No reverse, no downshifts

Got in my 95 cab this morning, backed out of the garage and headed to my thursday am, got there and the parking lot was being resurfaced, headed down another drive and a vehicle was coming my way, stopped and went into reverse, nothing!!

On the way to my destination it seemed as though there was slippage especially in down shifting, the RPM's dropped to idle speed when I would drop a gear and then would reengage to the higher RPM's after I hit the gas pedal?

Any Ideas. Trans was serviced at 80 K , now have 92K on car.

OKAY not warm and fuzzy;

So on the lift the vials on the side of the trans showed fluid / pink and almost at max.
Next step check the micro switches, ok
Put the hammer on it and all of the tests were OK with the exception of one of the Oxygen sensors, (take care of it next week).

Road Test: Now who would believe that now it was backed out of the garage, in reverse and in a short run the trans was used to slow the car down, so are there gremlins at work.

I have had the same thing happen after a dead battery. I started to drive it and it was freaking out. Shut the car off and back on and all was fine again.

So, did it go into "safe mode"?

The auto box in my 1990 Audi V8 used to go into a safe mode and just stay in 3rd til you restarted the car.

Hope it turns out to be nothing...serious!

Hi

I have had strange behaviour from my Tip when a fuse went. From memory the fuse had nothing to do with the gearbox!

What was involved in a "transmission service"? Replace the tranny filter and fluids?

My A8 also uses a different model ZF transmission and unfortunately when it lost reverse it was a blown Clutch F seal. Which required a tranny drop. I'm guessing your clutch packs are also shot and need to be replaced and that's why it's slipping. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I had a similar thing happen to me, where it just started slipping to the point where the engine was accelerating but the car would only go about 5 miles an hour. Iy turned out that no one in my area worked on the Tip transmissions...Why, because they never break down so no one ever deals with them. I ended up buying a spare transmission from an awesome rennlister that he had pulled off a parts car. Good luck with the repair, but if you can't fix it, perhaps someone on this forum has a spare you can use.

Thank you for the ifo, will keep tabs needless to say the last few days of running have been fine with no issues.
What a website as far as repairs wold be concerned, if it comes to a repair, it may sit, as I'm in the building business and you know how things are at the moment, maybe things will change I hope they do.

Transmission service consisted of new fluids, and filter, mileage was about 81k I also had CV boots replaced on all 4 wheels, and a realignment, oil change and filters, so.

Today is day 7 since the event and everything seems well, just very cautious, until I put it back in the shop friday.

All the fuses hare Ok, and the battery I replaced this summer (Florida thing).
