Default 993 service question

My father, who now has my C4S, is having the plug wires, distributor cap, spark plugs, fuel and air filters replaced and got a quote of $2k for all the work. He is using a new mechanic and wanted to hear from the board on the price and if it was on target? He is located in Annapolis, MD.

Default Service Cost

The service you're describing sounds like a full 30k or 60k service. You did not mention fluid changes (ex. oil, transmission, brake fluid, etc).

My 60k service (a '95) cost over $2k. But just the items you list, $2k sounds a little high. By the way, there are 2 distributors, I assume they quoted replacing both caps (I recall they are over $120 each).

I would assume both distributors caps will be replaced. Not sure on the fluid changes.

don't forget BOTH rotors with the dist caps...too.

Also, a very good time to inspect the distributor belt-don't know the cars mileage, but my mechanic says it NEEDS to be changed at 60k. There has been talk here about a couple of mechaincs that are involved in an exchange program with the old distributor-my wrench being on of them.

Anyway, back to the service cost-what's the labor rate in question?

You got damn near $1k in parts alone, depending on what discount-if any, the shop gives you on those parts.

So, probably not too far off really

That's probably not unreasonable. Wires alone retail for over $500 and they are such a pain in the *** it'll take the mechanic like five hours with the engine in the car.

Make sure he replaces ALL the plugs.

Wow! Glad I do all my own work. Wires weren't too bad and neither were the plugs. Just requires a little disassembly of the right side of the car. No special tools required. Well, except a hand that can reach into tight places.

I think that I need to start a 993 basic service center. I'd be happy with $75 per hour to do routine maintenance.

I paid from autohausaz.com last month
caps x 2 $103.70
rotors x 2 $46
12 plugs $34
plug wires $446.49
fuel filter $17
also got to buy the cool little screw driver ratchet set for the wires, 16 bucks.
toss in an oil change and air filter and you're at 800 in parts and oil.

my 25k service 10 years ago was charged 8 hours of labor. I think no wires and 11 plugs is about 2 hours.

my 2 cents is too high, but if there aren't too many good shops around it could be a good number. I couldn't get a local good shop to do this, too busy with other jobs.
so when I did this myself it was fun, but I chickened out on the distributor belt and it still took more than 8 hours.

maybe if he throws in replacing the dizzy belt 2000 is a great number.

I was quoted $1600 for a 60k major service when the time comes. I'm starting to save up already. $2,000 may be a tad high but I guess it depends on the area where you live too.

I just had the following done: cap and rotor, oil change, plugs (6), both lower valve cover gaskets, one lower valve cover (left), fuel filter, transmission fluid change and brake fluid flush. Cost $2100 by local indy but it was for a turbo..so not much different.

labor is the killer on the turbos, since the turbos need to come off for the lower valve cover gaskets (unless you pull the heat exchangers, either way, its a pain)

That said, I'd have done the cap and rotor, fuel filter, tranny fluid and brake fluid myself...in fact I did.

Cost for me was $20 for fuel filter, $23 for rotor, $90 for cap, $40 for tranny fluid, and $20 for brake fluid.

So most of the work for under $200.

If you can do it, DIY is the only way to go on these things.

Default 993 Service question

Thanks for the responses to the question my son posted for me. I feel better about the service price now, but I can see that I need to refurbish my mechanic's skills for the future.
