Thanks for all replies to date - will let you know what Bilstein says/does.
There must be considerable load on the nut/shaft during corning and braking, no? The piston is the only fixing point at the top that prevents camber or castor changes of the wheel/hub assembly.
Are nylocs a bad idea simply because they encourage the use of an impact gun to tighten them whereas a conventional nut could be spun on by hand and only require a 2nd tool to prevent counter-rotation for final tightening? Or as there other/different reasons?

Nylocks dont necessarily add much torque to thread onto something but enough to force folks to use the windowed socket and allen wrench system. Those who install without these simply grap the impact gun, which is bad on a few levels. One being what we see here in this thread and the other being the effects of the impact gun on the inside of the damper. I know on Motons and other higher end dampers, this can jolt-loose the nut retaining the shim stack inside the thing.

It has broke off because of the entire strut was hanging on a tiny threaded tube only. 
This strut piston head is about 6mm shorter than it was supposed to be. 
There were only a 5mm long thin tube remaining in the nut as far as I can see the photo. They definitely haven't used impact gun, for sure not. An impact gun would tear it off at the first run, not to mention a porsche garage would never use them at such point.
You had a wrong strut size fitted.
