Forgive me - I have strayed...Updated! Car is...finished!!
I haven't been posting here much lately because I have a new mistress - one that is older but slimmer, not as fit and is in serious need of a makeover. Of course us men are certain we can change those that we love and make them more of what we see as ideal - my new love is no exception. OK, here she is:
She's a 1967 912. Original condition, very little rust, not running and in need of complete restoration. Here's some more shots:
So why a 912. My first car was a 1966 912 I purchased in 1978 and sold in 1984 because at the time, I needed the money. I promised myself I would someday own another Porsche but other priorities in life precluded that purchase until two years ago when I bought my 993. I've gotten the itch to restore another car and appreciate the simplicity of the early Porsche's. This car is in better shape at 43 years of age than my '66 was in 1978 - an ideal candidate for a project. I aquired the car from my old boss - Scott Hendry of Scott's Independent Porsche in Anaheim for whom I worked while in school at UC Irvine in 1980 - 1982. He aquired the car from the original owner who had stored the car in a garage for 25 years and didn't want to spend the money needed to get it running again. The motor is seized from sitting so long.
So what are my plans for the car. My idea is an "outlaw" type restoration with a set of early Fuchs wheels, some extra horsepower, some early sport seats and maybe some graphics or stripes. Currently, I am dismantling the car and addressing some of the rust:
Here's the future color - a 1957 - 1959 special order 356 color called "orange."
And don't worry, the 993 is not going anywhere, it will always be a pleasure to drive. In fact I'll be at the FD Motorsports BBQ on Saturday with the 993 and the Junior. And I'll keep you guys updated on the progress of the 912 periodically but don't expect it to be finished overnight - it's a big project.

912s are great cars. The first Porsche I ever saw, or even heard of, was a 912. I've seen some wonderful restorations.
I'd just like to encourage you to go back to stock; not the "outlaw" look. They are such a classic.
Good luck.

Fond memories! My first Porsche was a new '66 912 purchased in Dallas when I got out of the Navy. It was a great car. Kept it for 5 years before moving up to a '72 911T. Yeah, tweak the engine but I vote for the stock look...maybe add black "PORSCHE" side stripes.

Same here, a 1966 912 was my first car, purchased in 1976! I was young and looking at 356's and when I saw a 912 that was in my price range, I had to have it!
Spent the next year repairing a rusted trunk pan and rebuilding the engine with a 1750 big bore kit and hot rod cam. Kept it for 15 years. It had the gasoline powered heater, somewhat scary but good to have if you lived where it got cold.
Enjoy the simplicity and basic design, that is a car you can do all of the restoration work by yourself.

Welcome back to the 912 owners circle. You should check out the 912 Registry if you haven't already. Great group of crazy enthusiasts that LOVE to drive their cars. Lots of them are serious autocross folks which is the 912's forte. Can't wait to see the car at the BBQ...
