Default DUCKTAIL! Updated with pics

The UPS man just delivered my Getty Design ducktail. I am going to try the install myself this weekend. The instructions are a bit daunting with all the grinding/filling necessary to make it fit right. Maybe I won't need to do much of that. Wish me luck. I'll post pics when it's done.

Yes, please post before and after from several angles comparing the RS & duck!

Excellent - looking forward to the pics!

I wonder, why can't parts like this leave the factory with a higher level of fit & finish? Is it cost?

I know our cars have slight body variations, but something like this should really be plug & play. Apart from paint, or course.

Just some thoughts, since I've dealt with bush league fit & finish on a pair of brake ducts in the past...

Actually the Getty duck requires very little to make it fit properly. A little sanding on the leading edge and some extra shims was all I needed.
I am fitting another one to a customers car this week.

Andreas, I think the moulds change a little bit as they're used so each product is very slightly different than the last. As well, composites like fibre glass don't really take a final shape right away. Over time they cure. This process depends on heat and other factors. Even a factory steel piece will likely need some shimming to make it fit correctly.

Of course a quality mould and production DO make a difference and the Getty lids have a good reputation.

Shouldn't actually take as much as the instructions say. Mine was about like Darin says, a little shaping on the edges and some shims. The instructions call for fairly heavy filing on the underside edges which I didn't do. I saw no reason to remove material from underneath since there is no clearance issue on the sides and felt it would retain strength better. Good luck, holler if you have questions.

Bob,

Let me know when you get it installed. I'd like to see it. I keep going back and forth whether I should replace my aerokit spoiler with a ducktail.

I fit it tonight and you guys are right. A couple shims and A tiny bit of sanding on the leading edge was all it took. I guess they give you the instructions for the "worst case scenario". We'll see how the painting goes tomorrow.

I'm going to keep it so I can change back and forth if I want to. At least that's my plan...
