When the light comes on I start looking for a gas station right away. I don't think there is more than a gallon, but I'm not sure.

You can go at least 30 freeway miles based on my hopefully never to be repeated experience.

According to the manual the standard tank is appx. 19 gallons plus 2.6 gallons reserve (all US Gals.) Given the fact that on most tanks the last gallon is pretty much inaccessable figure you've got 1-1.5 gallons in reserve which is in line with the comments above.

I am not sure the US tank is 19 gallons PLUS 2.6 gallons reserve. The most I've ever gone is about 40 miles with the light on and I put in 17.9 gallons at the pump.

I don't know how a 993 tank is constructed but on my first Porsche (a really old 924 Turbo) there was a well at the bottom with the tank pump, so that all but maybe a quart might be left before your car stopped. I would think all tanks would be similar (which would also help avoid effects of sloshing).

You may be right although a 16.4 gallon "main" tank sounds pretty small. I also suspect that just like in the oil tanks the sending units aren't too uniform either so YMMV.

Well you know how many gallons your gas tank holds, so the next time your gas warning light comes on, fill it and note how many gallons it took to fill.

The difference is how many gallons you had left.

I like to know how much gas I have left at the 1/4 tank and the lowest line on the gas gauge. Simple math tells me how much further I can go from those points.

Alex what you are saying makes sense. Don't know why I havent spent the time to figure out what's left in my tank based on physical contents of tank. I do know I reset my trip odo every fill-up and can go 350 miles max before filling up. The light comes on in about 305-310 miles pretty reliably.

I remember another string about mileage - how surprising that mileage varies quite a bit.

Dave, my mileage sits at 11 liters/100 kms (21.4 MPG US gal) with a tight standard deviation since it is driven in a consistent manner.

Our standard gas tank holds 71 liters (15.7 US gal) so my range is 71/11 * 100 = 645 kms or 401 miles.

no it cannot be accurate.
several factors here,
in summer or hot temp. the tank takes more gas
and the lowest pick-up of the tank filter is several centimeters higher than the base of the tank. IIRC between 4 - 7 cms above the bottom of the tank.
I made about 70 highway kms on a light once trying to find a pump.
I take act as if there would be around 10 liters left, above the filter level, after light goes on.

My light comes on at around 320 miles on a tank. Not sure of how many miles I've done post-warning light, probably 40+. The most I've ever put in at fill up was 18.6 gallons, 350 miles on that one. The most I've done on any single tank was 378 miles.
