Noticed I have the a hole in the rubber boot sitting on top of the fan. The hole is about 3" by 2". Seems the rubber is deteriorating and breaking apart. I need to take the car in for service soon and wanted to know if it's OK to drive until then. What is the boot's purpose?
It supplies air to the heater fan. your problem is not uncommon - the boot becomes brittle with age and just falls apart. I would replace it before driving the car just to be on the safe side. The pieces from the boot can scatter around the cylinders underneath and they will cool less efficiently. Also the hole in the boot will let a decent amount of air escape from the fan before it reaches the cylinders. It won't be catastrophic if you drove the car, but it's a cheap ($60 I think) part and easy to replace.
It is a very common problem with these cars - age related. as to driving it? many of us have put many miles on the car before realizing the hole was there. Its a pretty easy DIY - either way a few miles won't hurt anything while you wait for the part or your shop to get to it. just my $.02!
There are (2) replacement boots for this part, the non-varioram part # starts with 964 and the varioram part # starts with 993 IIRC. Do a search on this and you will find the correct part # for your car. Very easy DIY.
The varioram 993 part number is 993-106-403-00 the Porsche list price is $49.76 the price from Sunset Porsche is $30.79 plus shipping. I just replaced mine a couple of days ago. You just need a 10mm open end wrench and a rag to cover the opening from anything falling in the hole on top of the engine. Don't remover the three bolts all the way when removing the old one.....
