Wave or flash all expect cayenne's and get a response from 993's and prior...997's rarely return...996's 50%...panamera's never...

Where I grew up in Maryland, flashing lights meant "speed trap coming up for you."

Perhaps that's why I try to muster a wave to pre-'99 P-cars only. Even then, it's hard to get the hand out the window quickly enough...
In theory, I would wave to a later car with a Rennlist sticker, but you can't detect that at speed.

Not in the least. I do it all the time. Should a cop ever decide to pull me over for this (as discussed in another thread), I'd simply state that I was flashing my lights to greet a friend.

Flash/wave in the 993 to any 997 and prior 911 variant, and Boxsters by mistake when I can't tell the difference soon enough

From the Boxsters I just get a confused stare if anything....sad really.

By contrast, in the CTT I usually don't think of it....must be the VW vibe. I haven't driven the Panamera enough to see how I will react....more like the 993 or the CTT? I'm not even going to try to explain this to the wife yet. She doesn't even recognize me passing her on the road, much less some other stranger in the same brand of car.

Back in the day when I had a jacked-to-the-sky V8 CJ7 (complete with body rotting off the frame) other Jeepsters would about fall out waving...and so would I.

Times are not the same......and get off my lawn!

As a very old Porsche guy I can say that it was something we routinely did because any Porsche on the roadway was a rare event. For two to cross paths was even rarer! Thus came the flash. But when Porsche started building cars with truly impossible to flash cars (e.g., 914, 944) the custom started to fade from use.

Today, it is really quite difficult to identify a modern Porsche from a distance. They look a lot like other cars from a distance, so by the time I can get 100% on a vis ID I may have missed the opportunity.

I have to admit something happened the other day that surprised the heck out of me. I got flashed by a Cayenne!!

I've tried to greet the Porsche drivers I see, I so rarely get a response from any of them that I've all but given up.
Motorcyclists are a much more responsive group and will usually return my greeting...

I had a BMW 2002 back in '75. There weren't too many BMWs on the road then so owners flashed their lights. No doubt Porsches did too. Things are different now. Global village. No exclusivity.

In the US I wave to all other 911s. I tried waving to other Porsches, but they just don't get it so I gave up.

Now that I am in Germany, I was surprised that Porsche drivers do not wave. Whenever I pass another 911 I flash or wave. Usually they flash or wave back. Maybe I will start something here in Germany.

I'd say 80% of the time I get a wave, peace sign, flash or the like from the pre-996 crowd around town. The other day I was sitting at a light waiting to make a left when an older couple 997 cruised through the intersection coming the opposite way. The driver flashed upon seeing my car, about the same time I flipped the peace sign on top of the steering wheel and then I glance from the driver to the wife in the passenger seat and she smiled a big smile, I was 100% sure they enjoyed just seeing my car out and about, some just get it. I wondered if they owned a 993 in the past or how many Porsches they may have owned over the years... Anyway, that made my evening.

Chuck-- Did you make it to Monetary, er -- Monterey -- this year? Missed ya (& the bachelor party) 'Round heah, lights flash is generally a friendly gesture to oncoming traffic: "obstacle ahead" (deer, speed trap, etc.), to include a following thumbs-up or wave when they dig your ride

As opposed to Germany......where, when I drove there last, I was told it had become a sign of aggressive driving & was therefore illegal
