My engine is out and I am contemplating whether to change plug wires. PO changed at 68,000, and I have 97,000 miles now. Sure looks like it would be a bitch to do with engine in car.

Should I do now? But $500...

no brainer in my mind. i did it - engine in - not much fun....there are a couple of sources that are slightly less than $500. there is a whole list of things you want to do with the engine out. gaskets, seals, belts, plugs, wires, etc. never a better time.

No.

Ohm the Suckers and look for cracks. It is doubtful that rhey need replacement in 27k miles unless there are other issues.

Why spend 500 if you don't have to

How long do you plan on keeping the car? If longer than 5 years... Save yourself a headache.

Default 993 engine removal

Hello Just purchased 1996 933 and my engine is leaking oil at a high rate, car has 85,000 miles and has been some what neglected. We are about to drop the engine over the winter and was going to re do heads and all consumables.
Is there a tread on Forum with suggestions of what to replace while the engine is out? are there some suspension parts that are easier to get at while this is out ?
I am taking back bumper off and getting it re done as well.
Thanks
John

Lots of threads on items to do "while you're in there" during engine work can be found with a bit of searching. Seals, gaskets and o-rings, ps belts, spark plugs and wires are usually high on the lists. Here's a relatively recent and comprehensive example:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-projects.html

If you don't know when / if clutch was replaced, it may need it at 85k miles. You can measure clutch wear when you separate the tranny and engine. Clutch job should also include fork, throwout and needle bearings etc. Some also upgrade to RS flywheel and clutch at the same time.

You have to undo the axle shafts so might as well check cv boots or better yet just replace them and clean & re-pack cv's with grease (if not done recently). Messy, but cheap insurance. Replace transmission oil, too. Smelly, yuck!

You will have to do a 4-wheel alignment after engine R&R so might as well do any needed suspension work while in there. If shocks are still original at 85K miles it is time. Sway bar rubber bushings too. Some replace the front a-arm/wishbone bushings (often with polyurethane ones from Chris Walrod), especially if they have been experiencing front end shimmy. Also, the rubber boots on the toe arms as well as drop links (front & rear) may be toast by now.

Last but not least, don't forget to have the flux capacitor recharged.
