Default Steering Rack Rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt their steering rack themselves? If so, is there a write-up on it somewhere? I pulled my rack last night thinking I was going to replace it with a rebuilt one but figured if I can rebuild brake calipers how hard could it be? I found the kit but want to see exactly what the job entails to see if it is worth the trouble. TIA for your help.

I looked into rebuilding mine when it went belly up but did not find the parts needed for the overhaul.
Ended up replacing it with a factory refurbished one.

Edit : Found it now : http://www.klaindustries.net/993rack/993rack.htm

Guess my googling has improved
I have seen it done a couple of times and i would say it is definitely more complicated than caliper rebuilding
If calipers are 2/10 i would say this is closer to 7/10 on the DIY scale

I think 944 online can help you. Ask for Ian, and I think he has a kit with full instructions. I did my 944, but the 993 rack is very similar, and if you can take the rack off yourself, you can certainly rebuild it yourself. .

Be interested to see how you do. Considered doing our 944 since the kit was only about $80 compared to the cheapest rebuilt rack being $280. Be good to know this for the 993 someday.

If no one can lead me to a good DIY link I am going to have to give in and buy a rebuilt unit. The last thing I want to do is take it apart, mess something up, and then lose my core fee. I emailed KLain industries about their kit, it does not come with directions because they say "it's meant to be rebuilt by a professional"...If I can get my eyes on some instructions so that I know what I am up against I will show them a "professional" DIY'r

I had a new rebuilt one done last year-then my mechanic sent it back for another-then he rebuilt it himself. As he was a Leer-jet mechanic who switched back to Euro cars-that was no problem.
It did not fix the problem of hard turns-so his last thought was it has to be the steering pump.
I was about to ship the car to Sweden and did not have time to deal with it. One year later(I have been to busy) I am about to do the pump and reservoir in the next few weeks. Will post results. I have been driving it with no problems-only when it decides to make it hard to turn-usually when parking.

Polaris,

I think your rack could still be the problem.
If it has been set with to much "preload" (really struggling to find the correct term here) it will be hard to turn.
I would think the hardest part of rebuilding would be to determine how much "preload" should be set (dont know if the 993 rack is designed this way)
(damn i wish my english was a little bit better when it comes to technical terms)

Found link, this might help : http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/steer-03.htm

If you google "how to rebuild a steering rack" you find lots of information
