I don't think so. I've installed a DDM aftermarket kit and have been pleased with the added light output. If you're buying HID, you're getting a Xenon-type bulb (i.e., not halogen) and will need to choose the color temp you want.

thanks... what i meant to say is; "maybe opting for the non-xenon oem 993 headlamp....

such that when i change it to HID, i can choose the 6000 k option..." —

as opposed to getting what i assume will turn out to be about a 4300 K lamp inside the oem xenon litronic assembly

from one of the dismantlers like 20th street or L.A. Porsche.

The headlights are very different and are angled differently.

i will make cuts at the bottom of the sockets to lower the opening in the fenders....

and then raise the level of the fenders behind the lamps. the result will be a nose that looks slightly more like a 993.

I’ve gone off the deep end with aftermarket HID’s. I’m running 35 watt, 8000K (light blue) on the low-beams, 55 watt 10000K (also light blue) on the high-beams, and 35 watt 3000K (yellow) on the fogs. Going with 35 watt kits, you normally can get by without relays. 55 watt lights use a little more power during startup and without relays are not dependable. My high beams are very similar to the output of a new BMW, you really have to be watchful of drivers coming at you, it’s a blinding light for sure. You can see ½ a mile down the road very clearly.

...maybe opting for the non-xenon oem headlamps...odurandina
I recall a post in an earlier thread to the effect that the part numbers for the lens and bucket for the regular headlamps and the Litronic headlamps are the same. Someone correct me if this is not true.

...the headlights are angled differently...blackice
When Porsche did away with the torpedo tube fenders, it was necessary to re design the lighting system to accomodate the angled lenses that came with the new hood lines.

and the cops leave you alone ? must be an incredible color. trouble is, i drive fast.

i'm thinking more like 6,000 K for the low beams and 4,300 K for the brights.

bottom line you guys are saying no need to go all out and get oem xenon litronic lamps.

Some of our local Royal Canadian Mounted Police have colour temperature meters, and will pull over vehicles with headlights that look "blue" (a prohibited colour in our province). But 4500 Kelvin is acceptable.

I would assume your state prohibits "blue" as well.

i was just wondering, at what point you guy think the low-beams get too blue for a Porsche 993.

if they came at 4,300 k from the factory, and 5,000 k look good, are 6,000 k and 8,000 k @ 35 watts too blue ?

Otherwise the 968 bulbs are like the old H4 ones and never came with PES, if I remember correctly.

dave

PS - everyone says the big ballasts won't fit in the 993 light assemblies. I've posted several pictures before of them fitting just fine.

here's the new 993/968 fenders.

1 more reason for you guys to pick up a 968 to go with your 993s...

you could drive your 968s on the nastier days. i drive mine winter, summer, rain or shine about 35 k miles a year.

drove mine right across a sheet of ice from virginia/nc/georgia a week ago this evening.

it was surreal seeing 250 + accidents, (some very bad) along a stretch of about 300 miles and 12 hours and very slow going...

I think the 5K's are perfect. Nice white light but more towards the yellow side of the spectrum than blue.

Excellent job of the 993 headlight integration ...
The 4,300K/5,000K will match the OEM Litronics best.

much thanks you all....

these look like 6,000 k lights and probably would get you thrown in prison in massachusetts — but, i still like em.

i've been doing an update to help my 968 appear closer to a '911-type' look (in advance of cutting my fenders for the 993 xenon-lit headlamp install)... i think Porsche gave nice updates to the 911 starting in '94, and i thought the 968 missed getting a facelift by just a couple of years.... anyway, i took some more pics today of my progress.... not finished by any stretch. still have to scupt the airways, install the grills and lower 997 lip pieces. i'll definitely bring it by the 'Porsche-Fest' in Massachusetts if they have it again. hopefully i'll have the new Monterrey Blue paint on the car by then. enjoy the pics. have a pleasant evening.

no affiliation, but if anyone is interested in buying a pair of brand new, genuine, complete, oem Xenon Lit lamp kits, you can pick them up for about $700.00 each. (yes, the same lights that now sell for north of 3 grand each at Sunset Porsche. *(you heard that right. $700). i think i must be the luckiest son of a bitch ever. feel free to pm, and i'll show you where i got mine.

anyone know a good for switching from the the stock 4,300 k to 6,000 k bulbs? much thanks.
