Default Saggy sound pad

I looked at a 993 today and saw that sound pad in the engine bay is sagging and start to split and crack. The car is a 97 and it looks impossible to replace without dropping the engine! Tell me there is another way.

Thanks,

Nick

No way really to replace the sound pad without engine removal. It goes pretty far behind the engine. If there are no other reasons to remove the engine, just let the pad sag as it's not hurting anything. Or you can try to shoot some glue in there. When I dropped my engine/tranny for a clutch change I removed my sound pad. Looks much cleaner without it.

There is a fix for this in the DIY section to give you some more ideas.

Just remove it, that's what i did, engine bay is much cleaner and you have some more room.

Agree with above, just remove it!
Without it, just alittle more engine music come into the cabin.
Looks better without it.

Thanks for the replies. I'd say that if I can remove it, thats the way to go, but it sure looks tough on a Varioram car. I removed the pad on my 73 which was pretty easy. It's one of those project that once you commit and start removing material there's no stopping so you want to be able to get it all out. I'll likely try the aluminum strip solution shown in the DIY section and see how that looks first. Then I'll wait for the engine drop, which I hope is a long way away!

Nick,

It's actually pretty easy to remove. Put a towel or something over the engine so no crap lands on it although the pad comes in big pieces (mine came out in 2 or 3 pieces) and there's not much glue residue or anything left behind.

Is there any downside to removing this? Will more heat get into the cabin? If so will the additional heat cause any issues with the vinyl trim and rear deck speakers?

I don't think the pad is there for heat issues but more for sound deadening. Taking the pad out will allow a slight bit more engine noise into the cabin but I don't see this as a downside. I have had mine out for 2 years and have tracked in some pretty severe conditions. No issues associated with heat.

you can change the pad without removing the engine, just by removing the Varioram, here is some picts when I changed mine. Mind you it was 'while I was in there' and I did not remove vario just to replace the pad.
