Very rare to see an IMS failure in an air cooled motor. The waterpumper guys will be impressed. I,ve never seen a broken intermediate shaft in 30 + yrs around these cars..Worn out ones,even a broken crankshaft. Maybe the pump sucked up something solid and jammed?

Of all the people involved in this across four time zones (and thanks to them), those who can be identified as "industry names" agree with you on all points.

-Have seen it once, maybe even two or three times in 20-30 years.
-The only real way it can happen is if the pump sucks up a foreign object.

yes, the intermediate shaft itselft would be a mechanical fuse in the event something hard jammed the pump.
