You're better off finding a well sorted out car that's been well documented with maintenance receipts. Put a little bit of money in the bank each month for both planned and unexpected expenses. This will help take the sting out of the bottomline total.

$1,000 is probably a good figure to get away with.

If you're a nut case, "maintenance" is defined differently and you can add another zero to the end of that estimate. After all, if it ain't broken, but you can improve it - it's probably best to do so.

Dont tell the old lady.

Really!? I know that lowered wide-body cars that are tracked will go through tires at a good clip!

too funny....

I looked thru my reciepts for the decade-
per year engine oil change has been from $180 to $250 depending on the shop. $125 and more fun when I do it myself.
tranny oil has been $30-$50 for the oil and .5 hours labor at a shop. pretty easy diy.
brake flush has been about an hour of labor, never done it myself.
a full service, plugs, caps, filters, oil, etc has run 8 hours labor plus another $600 or so parts, so around $1300.
toss in items like belts, oil leaks, fan resistors and hood shocks fixed at a shop and add another $200 every other year.
tires almost a grand every 10-15k.
so I'd say best case scenario plan on $300 per year at a shop, $200 in your garage. but then, in your garage assumes you already have tools, jack stands and other infrastructure.
at least another $50 per year minimum for car wash, towels, polish, wax, leather conditioner, wheel cleaner, bug remover.

after that I'd say there's at least $500-5000 per year on toys, HIDs, golden rod, wheels, lowering springs, exhaust, sport cats, chip, engine mounts, rothsport single pulley and billet short shift, turbo front bumper...

there are 2 other 993's at my golf course, both bare bones stock. one is in great shape and I'd guess the guy spends $300 or more per year having someone take care of it.
the other is sad, always dirty, one tail pipe hanging lower that the other, wheel rash, cat paw prints on the hood... guy probably has the oil changed every 10k miles and averages $50 per year.
I probably average at least $1k per year on maintenance, tools, products and mods.
but then I still have stock seats and steering wheel.

OT:
Raptor needs one more post for the magic number!!!

I have a spreadsheet with all the maintenance, repairs, and mods done to my car since new.
$30,911.11 divide by 15 and it's $2,060.74 per year. This includes the slippery slope. However, I've only had it 3.25 years and it was bone stock when I got it.
Also, I do all the easy stuff (oil, brakes, etc...) myself.

I have every receipt from day one and a detailed maint. log book. I DIY everything but alignments and the recent tranny rebuild. I recently went three years and only spent $400 on the car for fluids. But the tranny rebuild blew up that average and I still DIY'ed the R&R of the tranny. Easily under $1000 a year if you DIY. Repairs and mods are another story.

I find some of these estimates to be pretty low. But it depends on whether you separate out repairs, maintenance and consumables.

I have had 3 of these Porsches and all three had major a/c failures with less than 50K miles. Current one is in the shop waiting for an evaporator, I had another one with an a/c compressor fail and the third had an expansion valve problem. Average cost for A/C failures is $1800 per car.

My current 993 had ALL of the oil seals replaced except for the crank case centerline seal and I think that cost me about $2300.

SAI repair can cost several thousand if you have to have the heads removed and the carbon reamed out.

Tires - one set per year (8K miles or so) another $1400 for the tires, mounting and alignment.

Oil changes - $200 each, twice per year

Front brakes - about $800 as I recall.

30K, 45K, 60K maintenance cost varies, but certainly in the $500 + range.

Don't forget that you're maintaining a car that cost $90K or more when new and although the price of the used car is considerably less now, the cost of replacement parts and labor has not reduced along with the value of the car.

I used to use an independent repair shop in St. Louis, but their hourly labor rate kept creeping up and is now almost the same as the dealer - but the dealer puts a 2 year warranty on any repairs and the indie does not....

It's still a fun car, but my '67 Stingray is a whole lot less expensive to keep on the road.

Happy motoring !

Look at the bright side, lads - for now, we can take solace in the fact that we're not maintaining Ferraris.

No, they aren't Ferraris. They're too slow.

But yeah, not as bad as an Italian exotic but as someone already pointed out these were expensive cars when new and we now own them out of warranty 12-15 years later. That's kinda scary when you think about it.

I'd agree with the figure of 1k for maintenance. Tires maybe every 1.5 years all depending on mileage and driving style.

Mods are pretty much an elective, so that's up to the OP.

But repairs are a whole different issue. Anything can break at anytime. There's no guarantee (and no warranty!) that something won't just happen. Sure the cars are pretty reliable, but parts and repairs could set you back big time anytime.

So, 1k on good preventive maintenance, $$ for tires when needed, and the sky's the limit for repairs.

Factoring in DIY oil/lube changes, filters, brakes and tires. In (4) summers of ownership, I have put 18k miles on it and average about $700/yr in maintenance cost (not counting upgrades). Be sure to factor in the $$ for obsessive cleaning supplies (just kidding).

I had the opposite reaction when I read yours. $800 for front brakes?!?!? Hope that included calipers, too.

Not that I disagree with the main point of your post, but didn't they cost about $65-$70k new?
