Rinty, turns out to be pretty much what Budge96 said....it was what I call the keyway.
15 years and 75k miles of short trips = thousands cycles of inserting and removing the key, wearing the keyway to the point that the car did not know the key had been removed.
It didn't help matters that I continued to fool with it; which I think caused it to send errant voltage to the immobilizer control and ruined it.
Replaced the immobilzer control, the starter switch and finally the keyway with it's integral steering wheel lock (ordered from the factory).
Works like new now (though I would rather not have the Drive-Block system at all).

I came to the conclusion the early build '95MY are best of the best....no immobilizer; OBDI so no SAI probs.

You have that right. This thread is just downright depressing. All the time, effort, and $$$ involved for what?? Sorry OP for the aggravation this monstrosity has caused you and so many others that have posted.

Default "Keyway" replace

Could you share the part number and hours charged to replace the Keyway? Seems like a good PM move.

Lock/ignition switch 964-347-917-00 STEER ...... $677.45.
Five hours shop time.
Dealer must order from the factory and it's made to match the original ignition key.
Took less than a week to get it.

I'm not sure what the cutoff date is. I have a build date of June/94 and no immobilizer. I'm sure someone here knows but maybe post a new question if no one chimes in.

No authority by a long shot but I believe early 95 MY were built from late '94 until about June of '95.....and most were basket handle cars, no immobilzer.
Mine is August '95, brake lite over the window, and POS immobilizer.

...how to establish...uscarrera
According to Streather, if the tenth digit in the VIN is an R, it is a 1994 production model year, S indicates 1995. The R series were built from August 1993 to July 1994; S from August 1994 to July 1995.

Also, there is a month/year build date on the driver door frame or on the driver door, but my car is in storage, so I can't tell you its exact location.

You're an early build, Rich. If you have an immobilizer, there are 2 red leds on top of the door cards near the mirrors that flash intermittently when the car is locked.

The only light that blinks when car is locked is the red top of the lock button, early car?
