I gave up on the crap you can get from HD and the big box stores and bought a real commercial mower. I also got tired of the tracks a 21" mower leaves behind. I ended up with a used Exmark 48" cut hydro drive, kawasaki engine. I can double cut in no time flat, nice striping too. Probably overkill but I wasn't going to pay $30 bucks a week for someone to cut my lawn.

Yes, my best lawn mower is my 17 year old.

Seriously, don't buy a low end Deere or Honda. Their quality is pretty inferior to the more expensive models from either manufacturer.

Toro Commercial (21")with Suzuki 2-cycle engine & 3-sp trans .... unbreakable ..... by far the best engine I've had, even better than the older LawnBoys.

JP:

Exmark, Toro's commercial grade unit, has a 26" walk behind with a 7 hp Kawasaki engine:

I got a 6.5 horse 21" Toro Super Recycler two years ago, and am really happy with it. It's self propelled, and you can do an oil change in about 3 minutes.

If your talking push mowers Toro and Honda are the top of the game, this unit is at a good price point http://www.toro.com/home/mowers/superbagger/20192.html at any rate make sure you buy a mower with a Honda or kawasaki engine they are bullet proof.

Default for St Augustine you need a reel mower

they actually cut the grass, rather than wacking off the top.

Best lawn mower? A ride on with a beer-holder and room for a small cooler (stopping for a refill is time-consuming and so much effort).

Honda is probably top of the food chain for push type mowers.

For commercial walk behind mowers, Scag is top dog. I've logged thousands of miles behind all types of walk behinds and Scag hands down is the best.

I actually bought a Honda today. Wow, what an improvement on my Craftsman that I bought 9~ years ago. I was reluctant to buy a self propelled mower as everyone I have seen in the past moved too slowly for me. Not this one....

Large bag capacity, fairly quiet and smooth too. Didn't bog down at all either even when I went through some very very thick grass.
