Have my self-propelled Honda for 16 years now, it NEVER has given up, alway starts (now that I said that). Great mower, only downside is it quite heavy, so if you soil is soft it can dig in. Otherwise its a champ, and as we all know Honda builds fantastics small air-cooled engines...all the gas powered industrial equipment that I have seen are Honda based.

I'm not a fan of the John Deere's like many others are. Several neighbors have them and they've not been the most reliable units. Also, they stop the blade when they shift from forward to reverse (what's up with that??). I had an eXmark 60" in PA w/ a 3 ac. yard, fantastic mower. Here in TN I have a 48" Toro Zero Turn rider, great mower and goes up inclines I didn't expect it would. For walk behind I would go with Honda or Toro.
On my Toro 48" at the mower store, I paid the same price HD was getting for theirs but got a 2hp higher (21hp) than the 19 @ HD. Don't buy at HD or Lowes.
Just my .02

For anyone with a smaller lawn, this has worked great for me:

This may be a California thing, but I got mine for $100 from my local Air Quality Management District when I traded in my gas mower. Per their propaganda:
"Using a typical gas mower for one year can pollute as much as a car driven for 22,000 miles. "

Got the Honda from the big box store, no service other than yearly oil & air filter for the past 7 years. Never not started on first pull, cut my acre every week. Thinking about now, really should change the plug and change the oil more frequently.....

You should be able to get a lawn mowing head for this baby! This is my friend and mechanic Denny Aker's unrestored machine, but runs great!

I have a Hustler 44" FasTrak and love it. Industrial all the way. 1.5" barstock frame, 7 guage fabricated everything else, industrial pumps - it's been bulletproof. Lifetime warranty on the frame and deck. Hustler is owned by Excel, the originator of the ZTR. The thing is 740 lbs.
I made a striping kit for it with heavy chain -
Cuts GREAT!

+1 for the Husqvarna. Bought it from Sears 5 years ago and it starts one pull every time. Haven't done ANYTHING to it since it was bought. Great mower... I've had John Deer too but for the money I think the Husqvarna is as good if not better.

i have a husqvarna that my wife had before we got married and let me tell you about the piece of crap that thing is! i am looking for a new mower because that thing is probably eaiser to push with the wheels off. if you use the self propelled bar it gets harder to push. my dad has a scag that i cut on for years and that thing is a beast. he also has a murrary push mower from walmart that has been great!
