One morning a few years ago I was complaining to my GF that it may rain and I had planned to drive the 993 to work. I was going to have to drive the DD. She said, "Damn, your life is such a bitch. You have to drive the BMW to work instead of the Porsche."
993 or 997 cab? Sometimes life presents us with such tough choices to make. Go drive a 997 cab and if you like it get it. If you don't. Don't.

drive what YOU want.....do NOT give in on this one. Once the wives start messing with the things that we are passionate about it only goes downhill from there. My neighbor is an ER doctor, too. He is way "overprotective" as well. Live your life....just don't drive like an A-hole

Vic, we're a two Porsche household as my wife currently drives a new 997.2 coupe and for me the
MY98 993 C2S which also was ordered/spec’d new. While the 997.2 is a smoking 911 to be sure and much different than her former Porsche Boxster, the ole sckool 993 on the other hand is character in spades, an evolutional character almost.... this is not lost on me. The 993 is my “Pine Box” when I leave this world. Additionally we have daily driver cars when a sports car simply ain’t right… e.g., Subaru, VW.
Do whatever blows up yer skirt… for me it’s the 993 series 911 car. What I think is… this is your wife’s method of declaring (chicks) she wants, needs and must have a Porsche 997.2 S coupe in say,,, metallic silver w/ full black leather… don’t skimp on the leather options,, go for the killer adaptive sport seats, Navi/Stereo, suspension up grade, brakes etc., but otherwise go understated and no stinkin badges. LoL.

If her rationale is your safety, then just go buy a big F250 Super Duty King Ranch. You'll be right in style in Texas. On the other hand, remember that "The man who was born to be hanged doesn't have to worry about crossing the street."

If the wife had not asked, would you be considering selling the 993 for a 997? I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. You are not in an easy situation. Adding a 997 won't help your cause. What she is saying is that she doesn't want to see you in an old cab. If it were me, I would consider trading the cab for a 993 coupe. My first 993 was a cab and I thought I would miss it dearly but found that with the windows and sunroof open, I got 70% of the cab experience. If you decide to look at new cars and want to stick with an open car, I would highly recommend that you test drive the Spyder. It will give you much more of the 993 feel than the 997 IMO. Best of luck.

"I dunno ... I'm not under any pressure, and having driven older 911s for the last 20 years, going to the newer car woul"d be difficult. The extra power doesn't entice me -- had a hopped up 87 930 10 years ago. What I love about the 993 are the lines, the sounds, the old-school interior and just the aroma of the car when you get in it. Tough to part with."
There's your answer.

Yes, I have thought about a 997 before, but idly. First time I drove one was when we were looking for a car for her. She liked the 997, but she has always wanted a Mercedes CLK 500 and I found a killer 06 one with 5k miles for less than half of the original sticker, certified. It's a very nice car.
(We also drove a preowned SL550 ... that was also impressive in that Mercedes bank-vault sort of way.)
I've had coupes before, and really prefer the open cars. I know neither the Boxster nor the 996 did it for me, so it's good to hear opinions from those who have driven both or made the switch.
I have to reiterate again, I am so lucky to have met and married her, she is not in any way harping or nagging or pressuring me ... it was just, "you know, I'd feel a little better if you were in a newer 911." She thinks the 993 is a gorgeous car.
I have bought and sold a lot of Porsches -- 2 911SCs, 2 3.2 Carreras, an 87 930, and half a dozen 993s -- over the last 20 years. I'm sure a 997 is in my future somewhere down the road. I will go drive a couple of them.
BTW, I spoke again to my friend at PCNA; his advice was get the later 997, it's a terrific car. He also strongly recommended not buying an earlier 997 unless it was CPO'd.

A though one. From what I am reading in your posts, the 997 could be an alternative BUT you will always look back to a 993. I have two buddies that work for Porsche in Stuttgart. They always drove the latest models as company cars and always look back to the 993s. When they have a chance (they come less and less) to get to drive one, this key is gone first ...

Go out and get some motorcycle mags (pick your favorite motorcycle Harley's BMW's whatever). When your wife asks why, tell her you you have always wanted one and are thinking about finally following your dream of owning one. My guess is that she will change her mind very quickly about letting you keep your cab.
