So she is now in control of your life...it is all down hill from here. You will soon find yourself at a shopping mall holding a woman's purse with a lost look in your eyes...
The 993 provides a more raw feel of the road and overall driving experience. You will loose that with the 997. But if that go-kart feel from the 993 is not important to you, make the wife happy and go with the 997.2, great car as well just not as connected-to-the-road-feel as the 993.
I would just keep the 993 and add a 997... that is just me. I need my fix from time to time driving the 964... nothing new even gets close to that feeling.

If I was in your shoes, I'd go test drive the 997 and see if you really like/want one, and which one.
When I hit my 40s (I am now 45) the coupe with AC was more appealing to me, although in my 30s, I really wanted an open car, so I got a 911SC Targa.
I am not sure the 996->993 cycle will repeat as 997->993, as i don't know the reasons you returned. At least for me, the looks of the 997 and 993 are vastly superior to the 996, although I am an admitted purist having owned a 68 and an 80 previously.
The reasons your buddy has an air-cooled 930 are entirely different than your situation, for one, I would guess, he is probably not in a position to own a 997.
having wandered about through all of this (sorry I am watching the Spain-Switzerland match as I type this) I would definitely give the 997 a look. And not knowing your wife, she definitely sounds like a keeper for sure.

We live just outside of Austin. It's been hot this week ... 95. AC is doing good on the 3 setting, though. However, the car hasn't been sitting outside, either.
When I got my oil cooler replaced, the local shop reattached the connector for the oil cooler fan. Drove home on I-35 in stop and go traffic around 6 pm, and man, the oil got hot, up around 230 or so. Pulled the connector off so the fan runs on high constantly and it hasn't gone above 190 since.
FWIW, my buddy at PCNA has a company 997S. He sold his 930 years ago. He loves the new cars.
I dunno ... I'm not under any pressure, and having driven older 911s for the last 20 years, going to the newer car would be difficult. The extra power doesn't entice me -- had a hopped up 87 930 10 years ago. What I love about the 993 are the lines, the sounds, the old-school interior and just the aroma of the car when you get in it. Tough to part with. We'll see. When we were looking for her car, we took out a 997S. It was a nice ride.
I would never put a cage, rollbar or racing seats in my car, though. I'll take my chances. I had an old woman in a minivan pull right out across my path from 100 feet away when I was going 45 mph in a 95 C2 coupe in 2004, plowed right into her door, I walked away from the totaled car. These cars are very strong.

Call it nostalgia or getting old... more and more I care less for newer cars and look for something that gets my blood flowing and senses active than a modern car that makes me want to go to sleep when I drive it because of how comfortable and disconnected I feel from the driving experience. Reason in part of why I moved on from the 996TT I had.
I just don't want to have this guy make a mistake IF the reason he got the 993 in the first place was because of the overall experience with that particular car/year. If it was just because of how a Porsche drives, then he will not miss the 993 and a 997 C2S or C4S (as other have suggested) will be a great car for him.

I am no psychiatrist, but from these words, it REALLY seems to me, that the 993 is your dream car. Ask yourself this, if money were NO object which do you feel emotionally connected to? it sounds like the 993, at least for now, and the next few years.
What if you just drove the 993 less? would that make your wife happy? Maybe keep it for the weekends, when there is less traffic. I have been married for 20 years now, so i completely understand about listening to the wife.

Just to be clear, not bashing the 997. I really like the looks, in and out, and the new engines in the 997.2. I just happen to love the old school feel and overall experience from driving a 993 or a 964.

I agree with your recommendation, and Vic should definitely drive the potential new car to see if he even likes the experience, you are absolutely correct, he may hate it, and then it would be a mistake, I am just suggesting that there are many components to the driving experience, road feel being one, safety being another(what the wife wants).
What I am suggesting, is that if he likes most of the 997, but the ride is a bit too soft, then I would hope that could be modified more to his liking so he likes the 997 100%, but if it isn't even close, i.e. he doesn't like the ergonomics or ANY of the car vs the 993, then he should walk away.
Of course to find any of that out, he needs to go drive a 997, and probably a few different models.
BTW Switzerland is up 1-0 on Spain. :^(

Vic,
Certainly a complex issue but my only advice would be to buy a late 997.2 with 9A1 engine if thats your choice.
I would stay far away from the M96-powered versions no matter how cheap they may be.
