Default Viper Crash And I Was There

Riding home on Rt 50 yesterday, a Viper jumped the guard rail and almost on to on-coming traffic in the opposite direction. It looks like he and his son survived the crash with only minor cuts and bruises. His convoy of vipers were parked on the other side of the highway. From the look of the floor board and door, I'm really surprised that the passenger's feet and legs were still in tact. Man they were really lucky.

Scary stuff. Glad they are OK. What may have been the cause?

Wow! Looks pretty ugly. I wonder if the 4-wheel steering system failed, driving him into the guardrail?

Knowing our state, the kind folks at the DPW will allow him to pay for the guardrail....

Also, I think Epic Beard Man is on the scene (white shirt, pic #4).

I have heard that those cars have so much torque that if you accelerate hard it is very easily throw the car out of control. Glad everyone walked away, especially the son!

Its not uncommon to see one of these leave the track on a rollback.

All Vipers come with factory standard guard rails. It's just that they get installed aftermarket. Good thing they walked away. I'm sure the Wife gave the Driver a good beating when he got home.

Looks like the crash also caused a sympathetic impact protection deployment in the woman in Pic#4.

Glad everyone is OK. Since they are, I don't mind making light of the situation.

My guess is that the driver looked down and saw how incredibly cheap the interior on his $80K car looked and decided to put the car out of it's misery

Default Horrible Crash

Darn, you P folks are hard on (not literally of course) on ROW sport cars. Although shaken, but not stirred, the driver said that a jeep cut in front of him and he had no choice. Apparently, that's probably what happened listening to other folks around the scene. I also told one of the other Viper drivers (although not politically correct) that it wouldn't have happened if he were driving a Porsche. I won't tell you what said to me. Agggh!!!!!!!!!

Wow- very lucky no one was seriously hurt. I'm not sure if its the cars or the drivers, but it seems like I know too many wrecked Viper stories. Seems like every time one came out to autocross, it ended up in the ditch!

The story of getting cut off by a Jeep doesn't sound surprising. I don't know about the rest of you, but I find that the sight of a Porsche (or any "exotic" sports car) on the road causes some people to basically go crazy. They either try to race you, or take off, or start weaving through traffic, or try to run you off the road. A couple of times I've had pickup trucks or SUV's for absolutely no reason try to block me from merging onto the highway, or prevent me from changing lanes ("oh, he's signalling? speed up and cut him off!") This is such a regular occurrence that I've coined a psychological term for it: Porsche Derangement Syndrome.
