Why I don't go to the dealer....
Why I don't go to the dealer.....Let's see. Where I am in RI no one seems to have the ability to perform a proper alignment as no one has the tool for the kinematic toe, nor did they even know what I was talking about when I asked. So I bite the bullet and go to the dealer for an alignment, no problem, its $270 well spent if the car drives nice and straight with proper handling. I mention that I have a rough idle and I'm throwing some misfire codes, and if they notice something obvious that's causing it, let me know, if its a reasonable fix maybe I'll go through with it. So I get the call today, and apparently I need new ignition wires. I'm glad thats all it is, and hopefuly that will be the cure for the rough idle, (I did all the other cures listed in previous threads oher than check flywheel). But hers the kicker, $1000 for ignition wires!!!!!!Seriously. And they said I need another piece of the exhaust manifold replaced when they do the wires, which I don't see necessary. Add in $900 for labor, they wanted 2k for replacing wires!!! I went to Kingsborne wire works web site. Got brand new Beru wire set for $350. I will pay an independent shop to do it. What sucks is that this dealer has one of the best Porsche mechanics in the USA, invited to Porsche factory by Porsche AG, I would love for him to work on my car but not with those prices, ok thats my rant for they day. Sorry it was a long one.

one more thing i wanted to ask...Does the exhaust nned to be removed for ignition wire replacement? P.car.com DIY did not remove exhausts, but some of the Indy shops say they will be removing the exhaust.

I noticed that too when I went to their website. The woman said to me "that's the one with 12 plug wires and the 2 distributor plugs" and I double checked and called back to make sure they had the right year and model (96) but I am still a little paranoid, I'm going to call again tomorrow to make sure. But she did say complete Beru wire set for 1996 993.

Any shop you go to is going to give you a markup for parts. That's not unreasonable. Dealer might be on the high side, but they might be willing to haggle. As far as labor - have you ever seen what it takes to swap the wires on a 993? Besides, you don't mention what an indy is going to charge you in hours or dollars per hour to do the job - that much cheaper?

Good luck. You have a brave (and cheap) indy.
This might be a good time to do valve cover gaskets if needed, esp if they take of the exhaust cans. It's an easy job but at least your indy would be getting dirty.

My 993 was running poorly, the dealer was unable to pin it down, and wanted to start changing out $$$ parts.
I took it to an independent, who determined it was the plug wires. Even then, it was almost $2000 to have them replaced, but the car runs great now.
I feel your pain, but $2000 at the dealer isn't necessarily that bad of a deal. I would have preferred to try and do it myself, but wan't in a position to do so at the time.

Just paid 500 usd for wires with plugs, wouldn't want to do the job for 500 i must admit, took me probably about 7 hours in all just changing the wires.
Cant understand why they would want to remove the headers though, sure it wasn't just the exhaust cans they had to take of ?
The cans do not have to be removed but it gives better access and it does not take that much time to do.
