These are mint. And, I believe, far less common than the later hardbacks.

Wouldn't mint seats be green, like the ice cream?

So...I need a little education on Sport Seats.

Is this right:

1. It seems there is the "early" soft back seats with side bolsters in the kidney area that are more grippy than the later hard back Sport Seats

2. The "later" hard back sports seats are more common but do not have the holding power of the early seats.

3. The seats, both early and late go for between $2000 and $4500.

4. The difference between the std seats and the sport seats is the side bolsters on the seat back. The seat bottom is the same. The hard back and soft back are the same except the hard back.

So here is a question....for the $2000 (or a lot less) could a good upholstery shop create the side bolsters?

Just wanna know!

Answers:
1. Yes
2. There are actually lots of early sport seats, but the early sport seats with the 993/968 stitching pattern are rare.
3. Market price......
4. No. Early sport seats have higher bolsters on the seat bottoms too.

Cheers,
Joe

1. Yes. These seats are the same basic seat used from MY 85 until being replaced by the hardbacks. Various upholstery patterns were the biggest difference. The 993 versions (and 968?) had different upholstery/stitching than earlier (3.2/928/944/even 959) versions.

2. Yes again. The side bolsters are less pronounced on the hardbacks. Easier to get into/out of and less bolster wear but not as grippy. The hardbacks also have the pronounced "wings" at shoulder level.

3. Yes again.

4. Pretty sure that both models of sport seat have more/bigger bolsters on the bottom portion as well.

As to your question, many have converted standard seats to the earlier style sport seat (briefscape to name one) but I have no idea on cost. The link that Chuck posted was for just such a modified pair, the seller quoted $3300 for the upgrade.

EDIT: Joe's quicker to the punch.

To your question yes that is exactly what I have done with my stock seats in my white 993 and they are great . Used 3/8 steel rod and foam and reupholstered the seats .
Btw old pic , the car now has a three spoke steering wheel with leather air bag .

Cheers Guy

The 993 softback sportseats are some of the best seats I have ever sat in. I had them in my last 993 that now belongs to rc1320 . Mine were $500 not $4k or whatever. And mine had the supple leather option. Not as mint as these though.

I will say the ebay seller and Rennlister with these for sale is an interesting fellow. I spoke with him about a car he had for sale once and, well, he was interesting. For what it is worth, he is a licensed dealer for cars.

For that price, I'd want the sides and backs in leather as well. Yes they exist, though very rare. And I'd want more electrics. And heating. And no marks on the bolsters.

You can modify normal (comfort) seats into sport seats, but it is quite a lot of work.

You need to add bigger metal side supports to the seat and backrest frames, make new foam cushions for the seat and backrest and, obviously, make new seat covers.

I have a saddle-maker doing just that at the moment, and the seats are due to be ready this Friday.

We used a couple of tired 964 turbo seats to get the right measures for the bigger side support bars, and the seat covers.

Modifying the original comfort seats means that I will keep the 8-way electronic adjustment and heating on each seat, as well as the optional full soft leather, that my car had from the factory.

As soon as we are done, I will post a link to the saddle-makers website, where he will post a photo report of the work done.

I am doing the same work for my 964, but will end up with full electrics, including lumbar support, and heating. All that and they will be less expansive than the set on ebay.

Love those seats.
Easy to get in and out of and hold you in one spot.

They have the late 930 feel to them.
