Default Turn Signal Cancel No Workee

Hello All,

The turn signal cancel on my '96 993 C2 coupe quit working last week. It's really annoying to have to manually cancel the turn signals, especially when I forget and realize I've been driving several blocks with them blinking away.

Is there a fix for this without having to replace the whole turn signal switch assembly? If the assembly needs replaced, is this a fairly straightforward DIY project? Thanks!

From what I understand, the "self-cancelling" turn signal is a fairly simple mechanical device located inside the switch. My guess (sitting here with my feet up on my desk - and having not seen your car) is that you're looking at a replacement. Probably will involve getting inside the steering column - which might mean removing the air bag. Not for the amateur DIY person.

you would need to replace the stalk assembly, it is all one unit

Not too bad to do but the part is not inexpensive

944/968 cars are notorious for that and they do not require a replacement. 2 metal contacts you can bend slightly and fix.

Most likely that parts are broken inside. Mine was like this when I bought my car, found a NEW stalk on ebay for $75 bucks.

Thanks for the info all. Looking on flea-Bay and elsewhere it looks like the switch assembly is one unit along with the wiper control. Moderately pricey for a new unit, depending on the source.

Checked out the DIY forum on this site, looks like airbag / steering wheel removal isn't too big of a deal. But, still need to determine if the self-cancelling mechanism inside the switch assembly can be repaired without replacing the whole assembly, or not.

yes, it is all one piece... "stalk assembly" is the common term, PET calls it the column switch assembly. There are a couple of different versions depending on options.
The last time we sourced one it was $300+, if I recall correctly

The assembly is riveted together. The piece that "cancels" the turn signal is plastic and inside the assembly. I don't think it is repairable but I've never taken it apart to find out.

Hey Dave,

You have to be a member to access the for sale classifieds but this link shows a picture of one for sale with many other parts. No individual price listed but I am sure he would work with you if it is still available.

Here is a the for sale picture:

That could be a great deal, assuming you don't have the OBC option.

I was going to mention that but I figured we'd make him join first then tell him it's different.

OBC DIY from Robins site makes it seem you could add it in to any of the stalk assemblies, but I have no personal experience with OBC.
