Default MAF Mass Airflow Sensor question

I have been told that the MAF on the car is possibly be going to need changing and the part 993 606 124 01 is between $1200 and $1370 although I have seen a supposedly identical part 993 606 123 01 at $300 which they claim is plug compatible ...does anybody feel its worth taking the chance or what the difference is ?

I've had a check engine light on my ten-year-old Lexus come on, and when I read the code it indicated MAF. I cleaned it with MAF spray cleaner from my local parts store, reset the light, and all has been well for over two years now.

I've been very curious about the MAF Sensor sprays. I have a can of CRC MAF Spray and was wondering if it's recommended to use these sprays as a regular maint. item or is this only a last ditch effort if you're having problems with one to put off buying a new one?

Hi Bill,

I've used this spray a couple of times on my Lexus, with no ill effects. It is made for that purpose, and apparently just flushes out any dust or dirt that may have found its way into the MAF.

Thanks guys!

I suspect my '97 M3 could use a good cleaning.

FWIW, the MAF is something I would rank as a 1 out of 10 on a DIY difficulty scale if it ends up needing replaced.

You must be much better at getting the MAF and air filter housing lined up and properly seated than I do. Sometimes it goes right in, others not quite so....

TIP: I found that the best way to re-install the MAF is to first disconnect the left hand side and pull it to the right, insert it into the air box, attach clips, then move the whole assembly to the left and reattaching the left-hand side of the MAF.

Do this with the air filter and air filter cover removed. Right hand into the airbox, push left. Use left hand to align MAF to throttle bottle and tighten

I once spent an entire afternoon trying to do this with the MAF solidly attached to the throttle bottle and pushing the AB from the right to the left. I simply could not get the thing aligned and clipped. Either the clips fell deep into the engine, or the airbox would not move all the way to the left without getting stuck somewhere.

Default 98' Varioram MAF cleaned, amazing

MAF cleaner is a must. The car was running very rough. Idle was horrible, shaky, bumpy..sounded like it was miss firing at half throttle. I thought I was looking at a valve job or rings or coils...but the motor only has 15k on it. Vacuum was tight...took the cold air intake off and the MAF. It had a coating of soot on it, cleaned it with MAF cleaner and reinstalled. Car ran like it was new. Because the MAF was dirty it cause the cpu to lean out the air/fuel ratio significantly cause HUGE loss of power and potentially doing damage. If you have any doubt your 993 is capable of more than its putting out or running just "ok", I strongly recommend cleaning the MAF. I was blown away at my gain.

Cleaning the air flow sensor - IF not done in the last 60K miles or so. It must be cleaned with a Q-tip in conjunction with “CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner” just spraying it out will not release the grey debris coating on the sensor element, the element when clean looks like a white circuit board. Search Rennlist posting:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...+Cleaning+work

If cleaned i am not sure it ever needs to be replaced.

^^^I've cleaned a few MAFs ONLY using CRC spray and NO Q-tips or other scrubbing material needed. I'd say it depends on how much crud one has on it. K&N filters could dump a lot of crud on it.

K&N air filters are well understood as a no-no based upon the amount of particulate they allow into the engine.

With all the negative test results having been posted, I am surprised they still sell.
