Default ATE Discs? or factory?

I know the Zimmermans are not good, but Pelican has ATE front discs for 90 some dollars, are these any good? It would be nice to not have to spend the 180+.

Any feedback on 'em is appreciated.

I'd use OE parts only. ATE rotors might not hold up as well as the OE, and the OE rotors already have the hats painted. Check with the guys at FD Motorsports. I got my pads and rotors from them, and pricing was good.

FD or Sunset. Frankly, the FD guys typically fess up when they can't beat a price. I'm getting into the habit of checking there first. Not as comprehensive as Sunset, but they don't get into the parts unless they can be more than competitive. Plus, damn fine fellows to deal with.

www.parts.com has OEM rotors from a porsche dealer for $128 in the front, $133 in the rear.

So, does anyone have actual comparo experience with ATE? They are an OEM supplier to many German cars (BMW, Mercedes, maybe more). While some of us might speculate that ATE doesn't hold up as well as OEM, is there any knowledge on our forum????

Nothing wrong with the Zimm rotors, really. The only problem with them is the "hat" part of the rotor is unpainted, which means you get ugly surface corrosion. I have never heard of anyone having a genuine problem with the zimms, and I recall someone even shot them with a quick rattle can of paint to prevent the corrosion. That said, sounds like too much trouble for me, and I don't want to deal with rusty-looking rotors, even if they are functionally fine.

The ATE rotors, I have no personal experience with them. I am sure they are functionally fine as we all know ATE is an enormous OEM supplier. But you may want to find out if they are "finished" like the OE rotors, or if bare-metal hats like the zimms. FWIW, the Pelican guys are pretty good at checking these things, so ask them to actually look ...they may have to get back to you, but at least you'll know for certain.

Quadcammer, great prices, thank you, but on that website I can’t find that the discs they sell are Porsche factory, all I see on their website is that theirs are ~$50 savings over the dealer. It doesn't say that they are from a dealer. Or perhaps I missed something.

Yes Inka, that was my question.
ATE actually supplied some Porsches as OEM a ways back if I recall, what are the OEM disks now, Brembo?

As I stated in my original post I am looking for feedback on ATE, I know the Zimmerman discs aren’t a good choice, and I will probably just end up with Factory if I cant find any feedback on the ATEs, but it would be nice to save a couple hundred bucks if the ATEs are good quality.

If the only major difference is painted hats, I'd pull my rattle can out of the garage and take care of that myself. If one is DYI-ing the rotors, I'm hoping they'd up to the painting task, too. For those of us concerned with caliper color, they could paint the hat to match -- or contrast. I'm sure red hats would help the car brake faster.

Parts.com is really just an intermediary. They do the web sales for an Autonation Porsche Dealer in Florida. So you place the order through parts.com, and the parts ship from the dealer.

All parts are new, OEM, and in a genuine porsche box.

They do this with Mercedes and number of other brands as well.

That place has saved me THOUSANDS

Zimmerman sells a "Z-Coat" version for the rears of the non-big red cars... but not the fronts, at least yet.

They also sell a "Z-Coat" kit that is the high temp coating that they use.
Looks the same as the "Porsche" rotors

I painted my rotor hats. They still squeak and the inside of the vanes still rust - I will buy Porsche ones next time.

On my 968, I have some of the Z-Coat that Mark mentions - I agree that they look very much like the Porsche ones.

For the $30 or so savings over Sunset or FD (or parts.com), is it worth the hassle? Maybe take one for the team and let us know, otherwise consensus seems to stick with what we know.

Thanks QC for clearing that up, great to know

While Im on the subject, to replace the rotors what do I need? calipers have to come off, so I suppose I should replace caliper bolts, and I suppose the little phillips screw

So here is my list for the front

2 Rotors,
4 spiders
the pads
4 caliper bolts
2 of the little phillps screws

am I forgetting anything?

I've never replaced the caliper bolts. They are pretty sturdy. I'd clean them up and reapply the loctite.

The little screws, absolutely.
