One additional comment on having to work on 550's "all the time"...One should keep in mind that the drivetrains most of these cars are 1905's-based technology complete with distributor points that have to be set regularly, twin carburetors that are always "out of balance," valves that have to be adjusted, clutch cables that stretch and have to be adjusted, and non-boosted brakes that aren't always balanced and require adjustment...Add to that the fact that while a lot of the 550 replicas may have VW based engines, their power output and state of tune is far beyond that of a stock VW. The SCAT engine in my car made 165 HP, more than 4 that of an original VW engine....Anybody that knows anything about engines knows the inverse relationship between HP and reliability after a certain threshold is met...The bottom line is that many (Most?) of these cars, by their very nature, are going to require more care. For me, working on the car was a great deal of fun...Kind of brought back the "old days" when knowing how to tune an engine meant something.

Josh, I noticed that this car is registered in NY.
Did you happen to notice what it was registered as?

In my research, I've found many to be registered as "1955(or 1956) Porsche".
And a couple registered as a model year built "Beck"(i.e. "2003 Beck").

I'm curious about how they are registered in NY, as I am very interested in buying one.

Thanks,

having looked at this market 2 yrs ago & spending lot of time on 356 owners (replica) forums seems best of the bunch (& priciest) are intermeccanica...much better reviews then beck
if you enjoy rods...then (built around a built up 3.2 l plus 250hp 911 motor)

Yeah, I still want one badly, but it's more of a 'back-burner' thing now.
