Thumbs up Article comparing 993 to 997 in Edmunds.

Thought our hardcore 993 owners would appreciate this latest article from Edmunds Inside Line comparing the 993 to the 997:

Yup, I knew I owned an awesome car when I found Rennlist and this article just confirms it!

I know the 997's have quite a bit of newer Porsche technology that our 993's didn't have. But I still feel our cars were way ahead of their time. And they are still a blast to drive!

I never did care for the 996's very much. The 997's have some great lines to them. But almost every time I'm out on the town and I spot an eye-catching (or sounding) 911 out of the corner of my eye ... it's ends up being a 993. It's just a beautiful looking and sounding car!

I've owned two 993 Targas, and I just love the look of all that glass. I've gotten several folks catch my attention on the road (one on the freeway) that asked me what kind of car that was and would I'd be interested in selling it.

993's ... got love 'em!

Good article, but can this be correct ?

"When you change gear, you can feel the cogs engage and hear the cam belts working in the engine. "

My engine had cam chains, last time I looked.

Unfortunately Porsche lacked the time and resources, so the basic architecture of the 993's cockpit still resembles that of the 1963 original. The five circular dials in the instrument pod, which includes the tachometer positioned directly in front of the driver, look little changed since the first 911.

The interior is not dated but is perfect and one of the many things that I love about the 993; it's like picking up a Hasselblad.

Good article. Of course it's not saying what most of us here already know and feel about our cars. Kind of seems almost analogous to how the 912 drivers felt compared to the 911 drivers back when the 911 first came out. Even though the 912 wasn't as fast, it was a lot of fun to get the most out of it. By current 911 standards our cars may be slower but they give so much satisfaction in both obvious and subtle ways.

Yes, Mark .... EXACTLY!

The older VDO gauges were simple, very legible, and DURABLE. They are also very easy to change out, etc. Perfect for racing as well as a for a street sports car. I am glad they kept them for the 993's. I really don't care for the plastic cluster that comes with the newer Porsches.

Yes, the seat, dash, door panels are not very elegant. Porsche could have made them nicer on the "standard" models. But it's the durability and performance that are most important to me. Nice leather upholstery is nice, but not necessary.

Performance is necessary on a Porsche. That's what the "P" stands for in P-O-R-S-C-H-E?

Out of today's cars, I think only Audi's interiors been able to manage the delicate balance between modern comfort, convenience, technology, durability and that elusive quality... class. (Sorry, Audi<->Interior is so cliche).

That's interesting. I've been thinking recently (within the last few years) about getting an Audi for a daily driver. They have a stylish look about them. I was a little concerned about reliability and performance. But hopefully the Audi "days of bad" are long in the past.

I just love when I take my 993 out just to even make a quick run to the store. I think the 993 dash has a cockpit feel to it that makes it so enjoyable to drive. I changed the gauge lights to LED which makes them stand out at night along with the sky night coming through the glass targa top. Amazing!

Audis are fantastic cars. The new version of the 2.0T is outstanding. The first four cylinder that feels like a six and carries a 3,700lb sedan with the efficiency of a Honda civic. Reliability issues were left behind some five years ago.

Great analogy. I currently have a 912 and a 993, and I love driving the 912, but also enjoy the comfort of the 993.
