Default Emergency fan - alternator belt?

2000 mile road trip coming up ... wondering if there's one of those emergency snap-on belts that fits the car in case of disaster ... I know I don't have the tool to do it myself, and the idea of messing with it on the highway is a bit daunting.

Struck out at AutoZone, any tips?

Interesting idea for a number of applications.

Wouldn't you still need to carry the tools to change the belt?

I carry spare belts and tools, so of course I have never needed them.

My alternator broke on the back straight at Sebring last weekend. Picked up a new belt at NAPA for $13 and had it installed with simple tools in about 15 minutes. Didn't even miss my next run session. Just carry spare belts and a ratchet. It's a crazy easy job.

I looked over the DIY at p-car.com, it doesn't look like rocket science but nothing I'd want to tackle in the dark. Especially with my skills ... LOL

The car's going to the dealer for an oil change Thursday, maybe I'll just have them swap the belts (they are in stock, I checked) but I don't know if that's more prone to be a problem because a) I don't trust most dealers on a 993 and wouldn't even do an oil change there except it's due and EPE is swamped and can't get me in in time and b) I'm wondering if the new belts need to be retensioned shortly after they are installed and if running it hard for 2000 miles without the means to tighten or loosen is such a good idea.

I think those emergency belts just snap together once you wrap it around the pulleys.

Make sure you have the ALT hex tool, & the basic car tools is all you need. It takes me about 10min to swap belts.

If you are concerned with it, have the belt changed before you go. Our belts are a bit more reliable then the older cars, & if you want even more, put on the RS pulley, only one belt to deal with. I do keep a spare in both cars.
