well, this is quite the hot topic
I recalled incorrectly, thought the rocker bolt was 8mm.
Also, the rocker bolts are hardened and not plated. They look different, at least as far as I can tell from the pic the OP posted.
In that case, I revise my guess and suspect it is one of the short cam tower bolts.
IF it really is an 8mm bolt
Trouble is, they are under the rockers... so I am not sure how it could have gotten completely out.
Back to wild explanations
Below is a pic, you can just see the head of the short (8x30mm) carrier bolt.
Not sure if it has room to work it's way out or not. I thought not.
Now I am dying to know...

MarkD was right, it was one of the cam tower bolts. Right under the rocker where Mark encirled in red.
One the driver's side, upper valve cover. The bolt also hit what seems to be an aluminum pipe, oil line I assume? I'll try to post a picture, the pipe wasn't broken, just bent. Odd thing is that the cam or rockers does not seem to have any damage, will inspect more closely when they remove the head to replace the pipe.

Sorry guys, had a miscommunication with the mechanic. It wasn't one of the rocker bolts.

The size and color looked wrong to be a rocker bolt... I am really surprised that bolt could get by the rocker. The good news is that this is probably where it was beat up instead of the bottom end.
The rocker hardware is hardened, the bolt is not, so the bolt lost the battle.
The pipe you are referring to must be the oil return tube. The plot thickens. I can't see how the bolt would have bent the pipe. I wonder how that happened?
OK, back to Ms. Fox

I checked the ETK and I think the tube is called the oil splash tube or something like that. It's right next to the rockers so the bolt must have somehow gotten lodged between it and the rocker.
There are also some light scars on the cylinder head right below where the pipe was bent, nothing serious, I guess the bolt gouged up against it too.

If you can take some pictures, that would be great. Its probably too late if they started to take it apart. You must be talking about the spray tube that runs across the cam carrier, and sprays oil on the camshafts. That would require some major work to replace for sure...
