Default My thoughts after my first DIY oil change

I did my first oil change today and I must say it was not too bad. It took me a little less than 2 hours. I do have a lift and a 20 gallon rolling waste oil lift drain in the garage which helps. I removed the passenger rocker and rear wheel. The hardest part of this DIY was getting the damn oil filter off in the fender well. MY GOD it was tight. I had to use a huge pair of Channel Locks. The engine filter was very easy. I did not have to remove anything besides the heater tube on the passenger side. There is plenty of room to get the filter off without removing a bunch of stuff around it. The filter came right off and was easy to put on. I used 0w40 Mobil 1 synthetic for the change. This is an easy DIY project with a lift. I could see it becoming a mess without a lift. I had FD Motorsports send me some new crush washers which I replaced. I am not sure it is necessary to replace these washers every oil change.

Is it really necessary to replace synthetic engine oil every 3,000 miles?

My thoughts exactly! What is the correct maintenance interval on oil. I do not see anything in the good old manual.

Yes, it is recommended that you replace the crush washers every time if you can. They are meant to conform uniquely to provide a good seal when the bolt is refastened each time. We've all cheated by reusing an old one and found a few drips here and there... for pennies on the dollar, why wouldn't you?

I was sold 15w50 from opc as I was told this was the correct oil for my car. Why did you use 0w40. Is there a big dfference between the two grades.

I change the Mobil 1 synthetic in my daily driver twice a year and go about 7500 miles between changes...and that is premature.

A coworker runs Castrol synthetic in his BMW 330 Ci daily driver and changes it no sooner than every 12,500 miles. His car has just over 120,000 miles. The used oil gets checked in our labs and according to them, its still good to go.

The normal change interval on synthetic in Europe is 20,000 kms (12,500 miles) and those engines are run far harder than ours. We're still living in the 60s with that 3000 mile oil change interval mentality.

So unless you are running a 24-hour endurance race, you don't have to worry. Besides, you have almost 12 liters of oil to share the workload.

Probably because it is on the latest and also previous Porsche Technical Bulletins listing "Approved Oils". I use Mobil 1 15W-50.

Just another oil article...its raining out and I have nothing better to do...
What motor oil is best for my aircooled Porsche?

I blend Mobil 0W40 and 15W50 to bring down the low temp viscosity. The Mobil tech guy said that this was fine.
