Default 997 seats into 993?

I am planning on putting Cayman (same as 997's) seats in my 993 and have a question. How does one remove airbags from the standard comfort seats? Is there a cover plate available for when airbag is removed?

On a related note, does anyone have a good diagram on how the seats are connected power-wise? Where would I get a mating connector? Any trick to heat switches? i know they are installed in the dash, I'm planning to relocate them and probably use different switches as I do not have the originals.

Any and all info on the seats would be great!

Asked the same questions on 997 board too. I know 996 seats have been put into 993 and read the DYI, but 997 seat's electronics and controls are different. the brackets, however, should be the same between 996 and 997?

OK, since thee silence is deafening it appears I'll be the guinea pig on this project.

Couple of questions for those who put 996 seats in their 993s as well as aftermarket seats;

1. How did you power seats up? Just +12 and ground? Or did you run any other wires?
2. How does the car know that seatbelt is fastened? If it doesn't, would that confuse the front airbags?
3. Are 996 and 997 brackets the same?

I put in Recaros on Recaro brackets and sliders in my previous 993 but for the life of me do not recall connecting anything other than +12 and ground to them. It's been 5+ years, so my memory might be wrong.

If anyone has 997 or 987/987C wiring diagrams that would help a lot.

I did 996...

1) hot and ground
2) try to use your 993 buckels and belts
3) Don't know, this will be an adventure Mike, good luck!

Power. I put 996 gt3 furnature in my 993. They only power required was fore and aft of the seat back, so I found power available in the 993s female 8 pin connector. You can probably fiure out what pins do what by trial and error or find a wiring diagram.

Seatbelt. There is a separate 2 pin connector that closes this circuit. Same end connector for 993 and 996. Not sure for 997.

GL!

Bob, Kevin, thanks!

The 997 seats actually have this large 19-pin or so yellow connector that has all the wires going into it, including the seat belt receptacle wires. In addition the driver's seat has a black box with connectors, 997.618.537.00 "Seat position control". Now, these seats are from the car with memory seats, so possibly part of that arrangement? But I wonder if heating elements are also plugged there, will have to trace wires.

I think the first thing would be to try and find the mating plugs to these weird yellow connectors. Not sure if any of the junk yards would be willing to cut them out of the cars for me, I doubt it. Where else would I look? The connectors are very large industrial looking things, about 3x4" each. Bob, are 996 connectors anything like that?

Kevin, thank a whole bunch for the diagrams! I have to see what IO can make of that.

OK, I have determined so far that memory driver's seat is a problem. Nobody has been able to figure out how the memory brain works. So there are two options:

1. Buy a non-memory seat switch and replace the memory seat switch
2. Re-wire the memory seat switch internally

I would like to avoid re-wiring. Does anyone have a beat on a non-memory seat switch for a 997, 987 Boxster or Cayman? Dealer's price is exorbitant, $500 or so.

Mike located that thread that I was referring to see below:

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...ed-schematics/

"Hi, I just installed 997 seats (from a 2007 carrera) into my 1998 Boxster.
Tried forever to get the memory box to work, even with a full wiring diagram downloaded at Alldata.com, but did not work.

I ended up re-wiring the switches, and bypassing the memory module.
Email me if you need a step-by-step description: jan.kramer72@yahoo.com"

Might want to get in contact w/ him!

Regards ,

Kevin

Kev, I've emailed both guys Sunday. First one did not respond yet, however Jan (a great guy!) has answered and sent me a Power Point presentation with pics and great details. My conclusion above about needing a new switch are from exchanging emails with him.

In short, we currently have a very decent understanding on how to wire things up. It's just that finding the non-memory switch will make things easier and non-destructive. Although I might be wrong on that one as well. Swing by, we'll have a closer look.

PS. As a suggestion to others - buy seats from non-memory seat car.

Mike,

I have a set of cayman seats I'd like to do too. I wish I could be more to you than a parasite, waiting for you to complete, so I can duplicate; but I'm not worth much on this.

I actually bought them for my '97 boxster, but am now considering them in the 993.

Thanks for breaking ground on this...!

Well, I'm just scratching ground, not breaking it yet

The bigger issue is that I have not fully deceded whether to put these seats in. They are very nice and comfortable, lumbar and heat, but I have to not only modify but also dye them, which gives me a pause.

Are yours from a memory or non-memory car? And where are you located? I might actually have an idea to try something to make it easier on all of us in the future.

I don't guess they are memory - they are very basic - picture attached.

I am near Cincinnati, Ohio; so not very close to you!!

Yep, these are on-memory seats. Installation, from electric standpoint, is very simple. Connect Red +12 and Brown Ground from he 993 seat seat connector and you are pretty much all set.

I'm looking at rails now. There are several DIYs on 996 seat install into a 993. If 997 seats have the same rail as 996's that should nto be too difficult either. But for now there are several issues that I'm concern about looking at the passenger's side rail. Those issues might not exist on manual seats, I'll try to figure it out.

OK, this project came to an halt. The issue is that the Cayman (same as 997) seats I have a power seats every which way. In order to mount them in the 993 some more serious modifications to the rails are needed than for the manual seats. I've confirm things with Robin yesterday, he did the same install a year ago.

Second issue is driver's seat memory. I've found two ways around it. One is replacing seat switch with non-memory one. The other is re-wiring the switch itself (a nice guy from Germany sent me details on that).

So... firstly, I'll have a great set of grey 997 seats for sale. All power adjustments, lumbar, heat... damn, I wanted them in my car so badly, they are very comfortable to seat in. 6K miles on them, look close to new as far as I can tell. I'll probably put them on eBay.

Secondly, I need to, once again, figure out how to put heat in my seats. If anyone did so for 993 seats, please let me know. I see several issue with how foam is attached to the leather, so need to hear from real life experience here.

Finally, I'll be re-dyeing my midnight blue driver's seat. Has anyone found a stock leather dye from Surflex, Leatherique or anyone else that would match Midnight Blue? I know they can mix, but if stock color matches I'd prefer that. Has anyone tried: http://www.leathermagic.com/Pages/lthrrecolrkit.htm
