The three socket head cap screws holding the side engine covers on were even harder to break free. It took my foot on a 6" long L allen wrench to break some of them loose.

None of them rounded out though.

If all else fails, you can always use a dremel with a metal cutting disk to cut off the top of the bolt. Once the top is off the remaining bolt can be turned by hand or with a screw driver. It worked wonders for me and is somehow very satisfying.
And you could also try a drill!

Too late now. You might try to use a long-nose Vise Grip.
For everyone else who wants to avoid the headaches...
Stubby Socket Driver, Hex, 5 mm

I knew there was a reason why I love this place. Great suggestions everyone. I'm going to try each one of your suggestions with extra confidence until I complete the job.
Thanks,
Ken

Its unfortunate that a complete valve cover seal replacement (including the upper valve covers) how-to hasn't been written up.
Removing the left engine cover can be a bit tricky. I wrote up a few tips on my SmugMug site.
The engine blower assembly on the left side and the complete air cleaner on the right side should be removed tio gain full access and to clean the area around the valve covers before they are removed.
