Installing Direzza Star Specs tomorrow. They may be a good choice for AX since they're designed (or at least marketed) as being very quick to come up to temperature. We'll see.

Price is good too...

Not to distract from your poll selections, but there seem to be a lot of people who are satisfied with the Dunlop Star Specs. Based on the feedback from this forum and others I had a set mounted today. An AX and two DE's coming up should give them a good test.

Short of an RA1, 888, Cups or V710 they seem to be a pretty hot tire. They are (relatively) cheap, and from my understanding the only thing the RE-11 has over them is ride quality.

I think the Star Specs are a level or so below the others in the poll. Similar to them are tHe Falken RT-615s. I recently got a set of 225&255 17s for to and from the track for $410 shipped.

I scrubbed my Dunlops in your neck of the woods today, Fred. Bloody miserable weather. Between the monsoon and light snow, I have absolutley no comment on the tires other than I made it home safely.

Once I get the car cleaned up, I will however have an 'unveiling' of sorts. Daddy has new shoes. Photos to follow.

You're nuts... I felt guilty driving the Benz Wagon in this crap today.

Actually, pretty close. Nashua, with a side jaunt to Devens and area.

It's a long story...

My first choice would be the original P0 Corsa - there may be some still around. R compound with enough tread to work even in the wet. Better than the RA1 and nearly the equal of the MPSC.

Second the RA 1 - shaved for DE otherwise the squirm will be very annoying.

R888. I hated them, huge instability at full tread. Heat cycle out rather quickly.

Consider the Pirelli Corsa System - OEM tire on the Mk! GT3 RS and the F 430. Not as sticky as a full R compound but very very close and better on the RS than the R888.

Best,

RE11s are excellent on lighter cars (2k-2.5k lb range) but their softer sidewalls don't work as well on 3k+ lb cars like the 993. Star Specs on the other hand, have stiff sidewalls and work extremely well on 3k+lb cars. That would be my only choice based on your parameters. Also, they are some of the best performing tires on wet/colder climate which might serve you well.

PS - Kumhos don't seem to do well at all in the wet. I also second the comments on the Corsa system but not from personal experience, just research. Lastly, when you go full retard, I would look into KW3s or their clubsport setup. Much newer tech than the PSS system.

Best,
Thanks Bob... I looked at the Pirelli's but in the rear widths available 315's (there are 295's available in 2004 spec which would be problematic going forward replacing as rears are 2x front) I'm unsure if I can get them to work without rolling the fenders which I'm unwilling to do.

RE11's are a fine street tire but pretty pricey considering you can get a set of HTRZIII's for 1/2 the cost for the same type of service. That purchase is the last time I buy a new tire without a reasonable amount of feedback from people who drive 911/variants. I read a lot of reviews on AutoX oriented forums and went with the purchase based upon their feedback. I will say I'm pleased with how they drive on the road as they soften the blow of my local roads.

No matter what you get, it will be a compromise from one to the other.
For Auto-X you need gumballs, that heat up fast & can take heat cycles. If you use a track tire, you may never get it up to temp. Then you can heat cycle them, & never get full use out of them.

For track, you want a sticky tires with good wear, that will be consistent, heat up, & stay there. If you use a good Auto-X tire, it will wear to fast, & can over heat, loosing traction, & possibility chunking.

I know a tire that is "good" for both is the RA1, it has good wear, good grip. Is not the fastest out there.

If I had the money...
Hoosier for Auto-X

To clarify, this comment was about the Star Specs not the RE11s.
