Hi all, Looking for the collective wisdom on starters on a 95 993 c2

When it is really hot weather, every 20th or 30th start, the starter does not engage properly. The starter motor spins up before the starter gear is engaged on the ring gear. The bendix spring eventually works and the starter mills into the ring gear. (ouch)

I plan on replacing the starter. Anything else I should check before doing that?

What is the best source for a starter? Sunset?

Should I consider a used starter?

I'll be installing it.

Thanks,
Pete

Runs $643 from parts.com (new OEM) (list is about $950)

vertex has a rebuilt bosch unit for $209 with a $100 core charge.

Sorry to hear. I also experience periodic starter failure. I usually wait two minutes and then it fires right up. I think I heard the starter is a PITA to get to. Do you know if this is true?

Go for a rebuilt unit - there is no magic 'Porsche' starter .... just good, old Bosch.

The R&R can be a breeze if the top barrel nut comes loose: if not, here are some of the tricks .....
